Welcome to /vm/abinogi. Mabinogi is a fun, once popular little old school Korean MMO from 2004 based around Celtic mythology with many different features. Your character can age, rebirth, eat food and gain weight, play and custom make music, and so much more. You can be anything and do anything all at once with no downsides. From non-combat related skills like cooking, tailoring, blacksmithing, trading goods in a commerce, carpentry, etc. to different styles of combat like melee, magic, ninja, archery, puppetry, etc. all on 1 character.

Although graphics and gameplay is still a bit dated, even after 28 years the game is still rich in content such as fashion contests, cooking contest, jousting, playing in or viewing large concerts, training pets, and so on and continues to be Nexon's most generous game.

Realistically, how easy and how enjoyable would it be to get into this game today for someone who has never played it (but has played a lot of different MMOs back in the day)? Is this game about pvp or social stuff or what?

Pretty much every bit of content through the game is good money, be it combat, gathering/crafting, working jobs for npcs, field raids or whatever
Fashion's got pretty much any aesthetic option available too, and 99.9% of gear is freely dyeable
PvP's a weekly(?) guild v guild thing that gives the winning ones benefits in certain towns
There's also a jousting tournament I guess but that's a lot different

Last time I tried this game about a year ago, doing the Blaanid quests ruined it for me. I felt like it skipped a massive part of the game and maxed out my combat talent so I didn't even know what to do after.

I can't really complain about the partial 20000 cummulative level grind skip as a newfag, but you're right about the skills it gives you for free.
It made some of in game quests and pucharsable skill items completely redundant and they didn't even bother to patch it up somehow. I still see much to do even after doing most of the blanid up to skakespeare, especially with a guild so I recommend giving it a second try.

It didn't do nearly enough, but it's the right first step on a long road to correction.
The current director, Min Kyoung Hoon, is determined to keep the base skills bad so he can shoehorn a class system in by forcing you into certain Arcana talents which they're drip feeding 2 a year instead of letting you play what you enjoy.
KR test server data files have some stuff for Alchemy Arcana in them now, implying they're still going loosely in talent release order which would imply Alch+Fighter this year, Puppet+Gunner in 2026, Ninja+Chain in 2027.
Unless they pick up the pace or change design direction the grim state of talents without Arcana is going to remain until they're all released. That's my two cents of speculation though.

The success rates on the intermediary materials are exceedingly low, as well as the demonic weapons themselves. For comparison, though, a single step of Blaanid gives you 220 AP, and there are a ton of steps.

In my humble opinion the 20000 total level grind for arcana, where for the vast majority of the time you barely progress just to immediately spike by several orders of magnitude after an insane grind is a bad type of progression.

the real problem is that the playerbase was spread too thinly. you have people that are total level 20k+ that have played for years, new players, and everything inbetween at a time when rebirths are once a week. who do you design new content for? how many players are in that target audience? how many aren't? skills took forever to grind, gens took even longer than they do now, things we take for granted such as special upgrading and enchanting don't have nearly the tools we do now. if you invite a friend to play mabi with you, how long would it have been before you two could even run anything together?

i think a grind squish was a necessary evil. that being said, i think they squished way too hard. you can become master of entire talents in like half an hour. the nice part of old skills being so slow to grind was that it gave you steady progression, now everyone wants to bee line it to arcana and demo/ruin weapons cause those are the biggest spikes you see. the early game really needs to be updated so that a single windmill doesnt trigger a cutscene for 90% of gens, and it'd be nice to have some content for new players where they're forced to party up and mingle with one another.
