Yes, SoA isn't "that old", but packets have changed since PS2 was discontinued. It may kind of half-assedly work but nobody is going to actually support that client or carve out code just for it without a hard fork. All this will serve to do is fragment the server codebase which is not a good thing for anyone. The autism directed towards this is much better utilized actually reverse engineering known unknowns or basically anything other than the PS2 client

Yeah gear swapping was clearly not intended, but its such a massive power spike that you’re at a disadvantage not doing it so square had two roads to go down.
Either add in a wow style no gear swapping during combat restriction or embrace it. Probably was the far smarter choice to embrace it, most content would be dead if you couldn’t swap out of your best pieces for a niche use to something else.
Horizon’s difficulty is already fucked beyond belief with some of their balance changes, henm items, and relic saturation i could care less at this point.

This makes the server pay to win, with a small percentage of wealthy players dominating everything. You can pretty much guarantee all the top crafters are buying gil, and most of the serious endgame players too.

I don't know where to play HorizonXI or Retail...they both have their pros and cons....

HorizonXI pros: Free, the world is not lonely and feels less like a ghost town, low stats (pre-ilevel era), simple gameplay, crafting and gathering are very useful so it feels more like an mmo, you visit a lot of areas and experience old FFXI, level everything to 75, farm gil and become the king of the server.

HorizonXI cons: Time consuming, Requires party to do anything, the server is run by amateurs, the server is buggy, you will encounter bad players who think they are good at the game, there seems to be a lot competition in the end-game, a lot of drama (never encountered any myself), no stable future for the server.

Retial pros: The full game, all the jobs, all the full content and it will take you years to finish everything and collect everything you want, able to solo a lot of things, Lots of helpful players, less drama.

Retail cons: Monthly fees, ilevel era with lots of stats on gear, when it comes to gear everyone is years ahead of you, takes a long time to gear jobs (takes many months to gear 1 job), lonely empty world, you will not be invited to deal damage or tank unless you are super geared and have a lot of experience (basically a veteran), you will play alone most of the time until you have few jobs geared.

As a newcomer to XI the only thing I can only see saving horizon’s endgame is nostalgia. Every activity with a group looks absolutely miserable, with having to stand around doing nothing for a chance to get a claim, and the only way to get gear in an event is with your LS managing your “participation points” instead of the game compensating you.
For the server with the biggest population they should properly take advantage of it. Leveling is an enjoyable experience because you have the choice of pugging with randoms and meet different people, endgame should work like this too. Have a choice to pug, and stick to your LS if you don’t want to play with shitters.

What most people in this thread don’t get is that having rare unattainable items like these is essentially what made older MMOs worthwhile experiences since you’re essentially chasing for an item that will take you a very long time to get. Most people complaining about HNMs are either frustrated old players who went into the private server scene thinking maybe this time I can be one of the bigwigs or zoomers that have only played modern MMOs like WoW and FFXIV which hands them endgame gear in a silver platter and your “grind” is essentially for minor 1-2% dps increases even if you are a healer or tank.
All this being said, I do think the HNM system sucks but even square fixed that eventually by adding pop items. The game is still an insurmountable grind because of this.
The only things I would change is hnm pop items and dynamis forcing ls leaders to distribute the dynamis cash on each run. The heart of an MMO lies in community experiences as well as legendary items such as these, but I do agree that letting a linkshell leader control the entire endgame scene is also fucking retarded. There are ways to fix this without ruining what is era about this though.
I will never agree to making endgame stuff easily attainable like some people in this thread want but anything that involves a claiming competition can definitely fuck off

ultimega is a really good pre-nerf, as it rewarded coordination + using stronger strategies than default PLD+SMN. tonberry is also cool, but the limitations of the server makes a ton of lag around phasing which feels unfair (esp. in hard mode). mammet is pretty dogshit, though - the inefficacy of utsusemi would be much more interesting if SMN didn't undercut the game's enmity mechanics. if they ever release t3+t4, i hope they lean more into stun immunity and interesting positionals.

t2 loot is a travesty, though. most of it is unusable and the best pieces are all sidegrades/traps.
