Truly single player. Just 2 accounts so you can have a buff/port/rez mule if you want. It's based on djeryv's solo server package. If you're not familiar, he created UO Odyssey which turned UO into an old school single player oriented crpg with a ton of new content based on the older Ultima games. I've been running the /vm/ server for that for over a year now. Recently I've been getting back into EQ and saw he also did some work on this game, so I decided to throw up a server incorporating his stuff on my mostly unused VPS. Now this was made with a much older peq db so it's been a bit of work updating it, but I just got all the custom quests and NPCs working. Now I'm tweaking the mob difficulty (using the later introduced scaling methods toward the end of that thread) and leveling rate then working on zone stuff like old bazaar. Right now the low levels (10ish) feel good difficulty wise. Blues are easy, whites put up a fight but you aren't on the edge of your seat, yellows it starts to get difficult.

If you're adding a 2 box then you shouldn't really alter the difficulty. There was a really popular server that launched a classic with 2 box called EQ Reborn, unfortunately it died because the dev couldn't launch anything passed classic but even then the server had enough popularity for volunteers to takeover the server and launch Kunark then velious but by then had lost too much of its playerbase. Raiding really only became a necessity with PoP, i'd argue that making raiding overly accessible negates more content than it gives until then.

Yeah I was looking at a couple of them, but they lean too much into modern convenience for my tastes. One of them even lets you use the #zone GM command. I like old school mechanics like harsh death penalties and meaningful traversal. No GM warping on my server, in fact there's only a few POK books in the world and they're all in high level zones (all of the books in POK still exist and function, however). Also no gay tutorial; racial starting areas only.

Well, the interesting thing about that turtle wow server is that while they've halted the retail expansions, they essentially forked off vanilla wow and not only made their own more balanced version of vanilla, theyve also created new content.
shit like gilneas is apparently a major raid now and they've added new items and two races etc.
it seems like a pretty cool and interesting idea. rather than advancing into new continents and new hubs and replacing old stuff they kept vanilla and just built out the world thhere. so stormwind, ogrimmar etc remain the main areas of community.
like what if someone put some of the velious zones off everfrost, and didnt bring the city zones? it's using the world without making entirely new cities and new zones etc.
its just an interesting take on a really old formula now.

When secrets revealed the details of the deal a ton of the older players were upset about losing custom content they had obtained, and having to shelve velious so early. More specifically people who were working on the more difficult quests and gearing to raid were extremely upset the server had to be accelerated to the next xpac for a small minority of people who made beastlords early (aka secrets being a retard and adding out of era garbage like usual).

This is to make these classes more comparably capable soloers in early-mid game. Rogues start with Chaotic Stab, Shroud of Stealth and Escape. Haven't finalized Warriors and Berserkers yet and I'm open to suggestions.

The XP penalty for grouping makes the decision to bring a bot along more poignant. You're meant to truly solo, but there are convenience cases where you'd like another character such as rezzing, picking locks etc and obviously also for tough mobs whose loot you want more than XP.
To prevent just spawning a buff bot for yourself, bots will only buff group members and if they're removed from the group the buffs are canceled. Can't just park them far away either; bots take their cut of the XP no matter where they are in the zone.

EQ really needs a server that emphasizes on the brutality of the game but not the grind. Getting to level 15 or so should be easily done in a 10 hour session. Monsters should be hard, and fights should require a group to recover and the XP should be good. I'm so sick of the mindless low level mob grinding but it's the only efficient way to go about it. I miss the times of hard fights and socializing during recoveries, now if you're typing you aren't mindlessly killing low tier mobs fast enough
