I remember enjoying it a lot on release but the moment I got put on the mainland the quality of the game dropped massively and made me stop playing

I made it to lv10, but it's a bit too difficult for me.

I remember necro being a menace in pvp because it was hard as fuck to hit them behind their undead army and they could giga snare you.

They could also sit on cliffs and send their army to fuck you up somewhere where you had to walk a long ass path to get to them.

This is where conan exiles climbing would have really benefited AoC, I wish they did a AoC revamp or AoC 2 instead of a shitty survival game with CE.

I always liked how you could get the other races dances and hair styles with veteran coins or whatever.
Should have been quests or a SWG style teach system but still cool they allowed it, something a ton of games don't even offer.

I still remember when this game came out. I went around to a bunch of different stores and stopped at a gamestop in the mall to see if they had any LotRO time cards and the dude tried to sell me this instead.

I also remember that back in the day I tried to start playing it again (like, maybe around '10 or '11) but apparently the game just did not work at all with GT 240s.

Nah, I've essentially written off Funcom as a company (finally) after how they treated AoC, TSW, and how CE has careened off a cliff in quality for the last couple years. Only took me 17 years to stop trying to rationalize it away based on the quality of their writing and world-building.
Them getting bought by Tencent didn't help matters none since it was essentially the perfect cover basically for them to give even less of a shit.

But man, those zones oozed atmosphere.

Conan is really the perfect videogame setting for all types of different game genres. Its such a shame only Funcom tackled Conan and made such shitty trend-chasing FoTM games with Conan. Hyboria deserves a proper game with love and care put into it.

I mean, that hasn't changed - the bug report form on their forums has been broken for god knows how long because they set it up wrong. They know it's broken and how it's broken but just won't fix it. They also stopped using Zendesk for their support tickets and their new system doesn't even seem to work at all. People get no replies or even any indication that their support ticket even was filed and they're still trying to bill this as the 'Age of Fixes' for CE after cutting their prior age short because of how badly it has gotten.

Apparently there's a mentor system. These loading screen tips are pretty useful.

It's possible to get to some funky places on the snake island by jumping straight into walls while on a horse. /stuck is useful for teleporting back to where you fell from.

I've heard that HoX and Sin struggle to level, but they seem fine otherwise. Bear Shaman is great for solo play, but I guess it's slow for autism runs. Not sure why Ranger and Guardian are that low, guess they're also slow/low DPS.

I played bear shaman at launch when everyone thought it was bad but it ended up being one of the best classes in the game

If you were around back then the original meta was stacking dps gems to just overwhelm anyone easily, I was the the only person to stack defensive gems on my server and it made me unkillable and easily won every 1v1 I did.

I remember making the guild leader of blood pact which was the top guild on my shitty little server rage in voice chat because he couldn't beat me 1v1, so I purposely lost one fight after beating him 10 times and he immediately wanted to stop after that.

Haven't done pvp yet (don't think I will), but given the state of the game there's a 50/50 chance that it will either be a ghost town or a field of sweat with a small group of max level whales that keep the servers alive preying on each other and the rare newcomer.

It's very quest-oriented, very much like World of Warcraft. They're usually "kill x amount of enemies" or equivalent, sometimes they're about walking to a location or inspecting objects, but nothing out of the ordinary.
We don't know what the end-game is like. There are features and areas locked behind a paywall, though.

I enjoyed it a lot, very impressive for 2008. Lots of things gotten right I feel and has some flare with the voice acting and whatnot. The world is pretty captivating. Very nice towns, dungeons are pretty cool. Gameplay understandably very clunky, but has innovative mechanics for a traditional tab-targetting mmo. Graphics aged pretty well, must've been a high budget title. Big name title so it makes sense. The first zone (up to level ~20) has much more care put to it than the rest, and there is a fair amount of jank.

Tortage was fun, but I can totally tell why this game fell off. Funcom has the Mierdas Touch. It makes sense that they started doing smaller scale "MMO" survival games as time passed.

p.s. thanks to photographer anon, they did a good job of archiving the cool stuff in the game even if the game isn't that great. here's hoping the next game is very very different.

What actually surprised me about AoC is that I was fully expecting a complete ghost town: Nothing but the people from the thread and perhaps some whale with stockholm syndrome idling in front of the tradepost, but there were a lot more people running around the tutorial area and places like Old Tarantia than expected, the chat was active with people forming groups, and every day at least one of the things I put on the trader sold.
Biggest plus for me is that this is one of the few mmos with a bronze age to classical era aesthetic (albeit fictional) instead of generic medieval setting or gook fantasy clusterfuck. The freemium model with only one character slot was utter bullshit

I think the last two or three (seriously, the amount of info about this game online is shit, even STO has better coverage) tiers of raids are behind the expansion/dlcs. And speaking of, did anyone even do a dungeon or raid? Not those open maps like the one filled with picts or the underhalls in Tortage, but proper six-man instances.

For a 2008 game AoC has a lot of verticality, climbing a winding path and hacking through a hundred mobs would usually reward you with a killer view. The regions (Cimmeria, Stygia, Aquilonia) get pretty samey by the second and third questing area, though

It was a lot more active than I expected. Even outside of the main towns, it was not rare to see players.
I enjoyed the setting of the game as well. I don't know anything about Conan, but even I could tell the devs put special care in staying true to the base material.
Also, anywhere you went, you'd get a stunning view. The areas were definitely designed with this in mind.

On the other hand, the WoW-style quest formula is uninteresting. Doesn't help that you start with a two hours tutorial, to then find yourself solo-questing in night-time Tortage.
You could also level up by grinding mobs though, it wasn't bad all if you could find a good spot.

I did do a dungeon, together with a local who came with main (level 80) + alt. My damage was good in regular maps, but I did pixel-damage at best on dungeon enemies, and they hurt a lot. Bosses were, of course, far more difficult. I can understand that's fine at level 80, but it felt a bit excessive to ask players to get a full 6-man party, and play perfectly well, for a dungeon that would be outdated after a few levels.

Melee classes are supposed to do combos and the basic attack can be done in different directions, but didn't check it myself since I picked a necromancer, which plays like a standard caster (with eight pets). Never touched ESO so I don't know how it works.

More clicky like WoW I think. The game's combat frame is basically like WoW. Casters and Ranged Attackers probably feel just like it, Melee characters get directional attacks with your 123 keys, and when you choose a skill to perform, it does a low damage initiator, and then gives you 1~2 sequences of your 123 to follow up with. Kind of like DDR, if you finish the sequence properly you get the skill to pop off for big damage.
