Those are different concepts. High functioning means a mild enough autist that can conduct himself and live an independent life, generally after some some training to be a functioning citizen. Those often have some weird habits but in fact barely need any help. And they can have any IQ from average to super genius.
I know a dude like this but one day in a sperg moment he acted as a dickhead and I haven't talked with him ever since. I'm not anyone's therapist and he abuses his condition to act like he doesn't have agency.

Savants are a whole different concept, their brain is maxxed in one thing and completely retarded in every other aspect. Those aren't "high functioning" and can never have a normal life.

The thing is that Masters tends to have a basis for writing main characters if that character has appeared as an NPC before. For example, even though Masters treats Brendan as the MC of the Hoenn games and May as the rival, Brendan's speech style in Japanese (which conveys personality) matches his speech style as a rival. They just obviously don't include him getting fed up with losing to the new girl over and over again. Sometimes they give characters a shtick (they tried to make Ethan a hiking and nature nut early on but quickly stopped doing that because nobody cared), and they're generally not overbearing. Lyra had a senpai thing going on at the start because her NPC role in HGSS has her trying to be a mentor. Hilda is a hot-blooded battle slut because her NPC role in BW was hanging out in the Battle Subway. And of course you have what they've done with Elio and Selene where they reference their blank stares, or play off the Masked Royal being Kukui by having Elio realize it but Selene be completely oblivious. Florian is from the Violet universe which has future Paradox Pokémon, and he's treated as someone who likes sci-fi and mysteries. I think it's also easier for the writers to write Silver as a way of writing Ethan, because there are a lot of scenes with them together.

The real issue is that autism is a blanket statement for a whole lot of different behavioral traits. They all share some form of "Doesn't fit perfectly into being a good 9-5 worker", which is ultimately what autism really means. That's why it's a spectrum, because for practical purposes its easier to say 'this is a form of autism' then try and explain every detail of a person's specific compulsions.

I found that out recently. Was trying to figure out how to write Erika for a fanfiction and figured I'd see if Masters had any dialogue that could help feel out her personality. It's just pages of different references to flowers and sleeping. They aren't even diverse by talking about different kinds of flowers, and Erika has a decent chunk more dialogue than some. Sabrina get's some neat characterization from her time as an actress, and Karen gets to talk about some variety in dark types and her philosophy in training at least.

It's tough, I know autism makes people less able to understand social interactions of non-autists or whatever, sometimes it just makes dealing with them a real pain. Like I have several coworkers with high-functioning autism, and some of them are actually pretty chill to hang with once you understand their vibe. But there's one guy who just doesn't understand boundaries and will get weird with women and stuff, not full-on chrischan lovequest style but leaning that way. I feel kinda bad cause he probably doesn't quite understand when he's making people feel uncomfortable, but even then I try to avoid him at all costs

Nobody suffers like Fantina
I've never hated a character appearing as much as her. Her lines in the Japanese game at least have a bit more variety because there are more words for dance (踊る, ダンス, 舞) than English's one word, but I don't think they've ever touched on her being a foreigner and how much work she put into learning the language. She speaks differently to Lt. Surge, who uses tons of English and American-accented Japanese as shown as his katakana way of saying Japanese words. Hers is straight up normal Japanese, but it's not heavy on idioms, slang, or distinctly Japanese traits, it feels closer to how a foreigner who has spent a lot of time learning to speak the language perfectly would talk. There's a lot of potential for characters who aren't considered natives to their region, but I feel like TPC would prefer to avoid topics like that which get so political nowadays.

Yeah, the English translation of Masters is a fucking mess since the game is constantly referencing stuff from the games that localizers wrote out.

The most hilarious example is "Ganbaririe", which the original SM translation just replaced with some random pun... THEN they started officially translating it as "Lively Lillie" after they had to deal with localizing merchandise and shit that specifically referenced the name... and THEN they had to change it to the absurdly clunky "Not-Lily-Livered-Lillie" in Masters because the dialogue there kept referencing the actual game dialogue where the nickname originated AND made a point of the fact that it was Hapu that came up with it. And the English Masters dialogue still doesn't make all that much sense unless you were already familiar with the fact that the SM dialogue was rewritten to begin with.

This is why you TRANSLATE what's there instead of coming up with "clever" total rewrites.

If anything, what this shows is that when you're working with a franchise that's intentionally and purposefully international in its scope, you shouldn't write text that only works in one language in the first place.
The localizers did a poor job, but they were also put into a shit position from the start because of the japanese writers not thinking enough about what kind of series they're working on both writing SM and again in Masters (where they did an even worse job). The problem started with them.
