In my setting levels aren't an official thing recognized by any Pokemon League. *However*, sports commentators and the fanbase for Pokemon battling as a whole have embraced the concept despite it being borderline pseudo-science, the same way sports shows in real life obsess over the statistics of players.

So it'll be 5:30 in the afternoon and you've got Steven Azurill Smith arguing with some random dipshit on television shows viewed by millions of people about whether the rating of Gloria's Zacian at Level 89 is premature considering how much it struggled against both Marnie's Grimmsnarl AND Bede's Mega Mawile in last year's respective Semi-Finals and Finals matches - backed by miles-long excel spreadsheets detailing every move it's hit, missed, or crit in its career.

There was a story that used “stars” to represent trainer teams. A team that beat one leader could be rates as one star, two leaders as two stars, and so on. I forget how it handled the E4 and conference though.

That entirely depends on the character you're writing for in the background. In my story? Someone with the incompetent teachings from Pokemon Tech or that League Exam by-pass, wouldn't typically get far in actuality. Giselle and Joe (using them in my story) wouldn't know too much street knowledge, and rely too much on what they were taught. (Spoilers, it's intentionally making bad trainers).

Other than that, I just follow the episodes, and gauge how well the trainers do if Ash fights one. If not, I go off on what they say or all that.

Just caught up with "The New Normal" and I'd rate it around a 6 or 7 stars out of ten. It really should have ended after Regigas and Palkia arc. It was a natural end point, an while I feel the new Unovan arc has some interesting things in it it feels sort of like an excuse to shit on the region, which is a Huge surprise I know. Romance is sort mid, MC isn't challenged in a way that matters unless it's non combat. Let's not kid, even noncombat shit like the dude he ganked his sister's Pokémon or the galactic investigation its honestly not really long term/actually negative.

I think that there's a dividing line between active trainers and inactive. There's an actual shit ton of retired trainers, and most of them are definitely weaker than they once were. Considering the first 2 to 4 badges are often considered milk run/set ups I think you'd have a decent amount of once 2 to 4 badge holders. Actual strength for them? Enough to deal with a ratatata group or lone smaller predator, maybe dissuade medium wild Pokémon like liepards and mightyenas. The active trainers would clearly be stronger, as they have to fight more often. But honeslty I think if you gave everyone's pokemon levels? Most people are around 15-25, with one or two Pokémon to their name, IF their partner didn't fuck off or get eaten. So stronger than the run of the mill wild Pokémon but definitely unable to travel deep or off-route, which feels like it supports canon.

In my Final Fantasy 1 medieval fantasy setting, most people who train pokemon for combat only train one pokemon. This is because feeding and taking care of pokemon is more difficult in a less advanced society. Even soldiers tend to only keep one pokemon because the army can only afford to fund one each. Due to this humans (and other races like elves and dwarves) are expected to fight alongside their pokemon if the need arises. While most town guards or knights prefer to let their pokemon take care of most fights they are prepared and trained to jump in.

This has led to most 'trainers' being very specialized since they don't have much choice. Corneria, the home kingdom of the MC, has a ritual festival where young children choose their partner pokemon and it often remains their only pokemon for life. Those who train to fight for whatever reason thus learn how best to fight beside their pokemon. A knight with a Blastoise takes up a shield to cover for when his partner's protect is down. A dodrio rider focuses on hit and run attacks as their pokemon runs by. A Venusaur befuddles and confounds opponents to keep them away from a mage as they focus on casting spells.

So technically speaking, the average trainer is running around with over leveled solo 'teams'. But since combat is more serious they fight less often, meaning they aren't grinding to the crazy levels a solo MC would be reaching. So it pretty much evens out to even levels of an average team stregnth of regular setting.

Pretty much. The primary reason why I ended up dropping it. Nothing wrong with a power fantasy or two but sometimes it's too much, specially so when it keeps being portrayed as somehow still being a le hecking underdoggerino and the most humble person in the whole wide world.

He's plain and simply a genuine gary stu. It's hard to get truly invested on anything since you know no one will ever be able to do anything meaningful and it's all about him.
Despite all, I can admire the author's grind. Everyone here wishes they could write 1/10 as consistently as he does.

I thought about reading the new normal, but the first chapter didn't really stick to me and it felt like it'd be powerwanky but in the bad way and not in the good way. at least hard enough has decent wankery

As for trainers with multiple pokemon it isn't very common. There is diminishing returns on investing in more than one pokemon unless you're really committed. While technically more pokemon will allow one to battle longer if need be, most people aren't travelling long distances in small groups to have need of such thing.

And in bigger brawls it can become a liability to have multiple pokemon that you would split your attention between. If you're giving an order to your magneton and your dugtrio decides it needs to use earthquake in the middle of a battle while you're fighting alongside the rest your knight squadron then you'll likely end up in a worse situation than if you had just called out your magneton.

For this reason trainers with two pokemon can be considered to be ace trainer level. To have more than one pokemon out at a time means that they are trained well enough that you trust them to battle alongside allies with minimal instruction. A pirate captain that trusts his Hitmonchan to board an enemy ship and battle without orders while he rides his Seadra to perform hit and run surf+cutlass attacks across the deck is a force to be reckoned with.

For these reason it is said to be the mark of a legendary trainer to command a team of six pokemon. So far only one such trainer has shown up in the story so far.

Personally, what turned me off from New Normal was the meme politics.
It was not the good kind of character drama that caused intrigue and wondering where things could go next and what could be the consequences but the kind that made you felt you were reading actual law documents.

Tbh the main issue kind of reminds me of how Ghost Specialist's "plain MC issue" is, but without having anything else to pick up the slack (i.e. the mc in ghost specialist isn't a gary stu even if he's "generalist MC but grape (ghost) flavored" personality-wise).

Borne of Caution is a must near the top since it seems to influence at least a third of this thread's culture and has weight in the modern pokemon fanfic scene. But we'll need something less furfaggy and preferably less isekaifaggy to detoxify the recs.

I think all that could be included should be included, both famous or infamous.
Even things like Reset Bloodlines that, for better or worse, are quite influential in their own way and were once mainstays of the fandom.
If we do go through this I would like to also add as many old-ish fics as possible since they seem to be quite forgotten and set-aside overall. Granted, old stuff is old, but there's value in them still and revisiting old fics can be fun in their own way and provide a vastly different perspective from how the Pokemon fic scene used to be like back then.

The noncombat mention was that the author tries to make it a political focused thing and the entire region just kinda goes with what Normal-man wants. Him converting Giovanni into a good guy should make it eminently clear the "political struggles" aren't something. I enjoyed the ideas behind some of it, but like so much else the delivery is bland/gary stu.

Kanto centric story that takes place several years after Gen 2. Kanto is even more developed with many of the towns having been expanded. The popularity of the Indigo League and the booming tech industry has had the side effect leaving very few places where nature and tradition are untouched. Most routes have been streamlined to be easily walkable, Viridian Forest is more of a public park, a small town has sprouted up on the Seafoam Islands, and even Mt. Moon has a mapped out tourist path through it. The routes around Saffron are pretty much entirely replaced by urban expansion.

And most events of the games have become little more than fun facts or urban legends. Like what happened with Viridian's missing gym leader, was Cinnabar destroyed by the spirit of a vengeful pokemon, and did Fuschia city used to be a ninja village. Even Team Rocket is a small foot note that people don't even think about anymore and most people don't even remember who the winner of the first league champion battle was.

Let's just say there is a popular fantasy jrpg series that I'd try my hand at.

Though I have written some Fate GO fanfiction before and am a pretty passable fan of Fate itself. I tried running a table top rpg campaign AU once where the first Holy Grail War was taking place in Wild West American coastal city. Not pokemon related, but I was pretty proud of the servants I picked for it.

I have actually considered other pokemon cross overs but nothing jumps to mind right now. Oh, probably digimon.

The only one who was hit by the blast was Lysandre, and the base collapsed afterward. Obviously it's lame as fuck to obtain starters (and not as a starting Pokemon), but I'm doing something with a side character. Basically his fighting style is "always getting in the thick of a fight because he doesn't want to act like a bitch," and he's really mis-using one of his Pokemon that's too frail for the style (he's kind of an idiot sometimes). Debating on giving this character Sobble or Froakie. I take it Froakie is overdone right? Same anon from last thread who takes pride in using Pokemon that are rarely used.

I think following move schemes would be fine, if you didn't want to follow the move pools. There is no reason growlith shouldn't know grow, or machamp can't learn scary face. Now trying to teach blastoise flamethrower? That's a much harder sell.

You aren't someone exploring a mysterious ever-wider world anymore, it's always at the behest of someone, under someone else's planning. Don't think I need to explain how that happened in the SM anime, and it's arguably even worse than the SM games, and ever since the worldwide format started with Journeys and is now repeated with Horizons the world feels extremely small with how the characters are in one Region one day and another Region the other day just like that. Another big issue of this in the anime is how so many Pokemon don't get to appear at all in the anime so we don't get to see them animated and learn how they move how they act and what-not in more bigger better detail. Not to defend G*lar, but it's crazy how there's Pokemon from there that have yet to be featured at all in the anime. The anime completely fails even as a shilling machine now.

I like this one a lot. Framing it as a reversal of normal maturity, where instead of aging causing an animal to leave its pack, it's a case where a pokemon needs to be ready to leave its pack in order to evolve and reach the next step of its life. It's clever.

I actually sort of enjoy the "supervision" that some of the new games have. I find that it's closer to rangers on routes and adults making sure they're close enough on normal paths to respond, but not close looking over the kids shoulders all the time.
You lose a bit of the wild adventure feel but considering the games have you as 10~14 in what's supposed to be a slightly dangerous world it checks out. I think a game released that had an older protagonist going off route, maybe have a "wild area" or PLA open world thing off the routes where you deal with spicier pokemon with no oversight would be neat. Have it be a 1/2 game not mainline.
I still really enjoy the exploration and man and team vs world part of the game but I think we're at the point where one side has to give. Pokémon journeys have always been on routes, which have always been safer than off route. So the actual supervision feels like a natural outgrowth of that.
If pokemon really wanted to put an emphasis on exploration without the MC being part of an organization or school then they need to make the character older. Simple as. this would also let the dating sim element that the maps are so fond of occur, possibly with a travel companion or people ya meet
