Usual starters are the usual suspects. Professor chosen three get the "starters," if a gym decides to sponsor trainers that year (more common for some gyms than others. Liza and tate probably don't sponsor anybody for the first years of their gym, brock doesn't cause his gym's poor as fuck, Elesa sponsors "Beauty" class trainers infrequently.) gyms give type related Pokémon. Everybody else who isn't sponsored by a professor or gym? Good luck. Better hope your parents/friends/job has something. Government handout Pokémon I'm waffling on. Not sure if I want that to be a thing or if its a raffle type situation where poor kids have a chance for a starter, but its not guaranteed.

Excluding regional starters, some trainers have a parent or guardian accompany them to catch pokemon on the closest route to them, so low level first stage pokemon.
Example, may be new trainers from Opelucid City find themselves starting with a Pawniard, Solosis, Gothita, Purrloin, or Minccino.
Some may get them from non specialized breeders or shops, stuff like Growlithes could be popular among the more middle class trainers.

A fic got me hyped for Rotoms. I'm tempted to make a fic based around an trainer MC who starts off making custom battle rotom forms. Since every form has a special move, and types change, it would be fun to go through the thought process and experiments and stuff. Get really nerdy and fantasy-technical if you know what I mean.

Personally I'd start with the basics, go into improving pieces of each equipment and modifying them to see if anything happens, how far can something be pushed and still be a lawnmower. Then you get custom forms, after its shown that the MC can actually do stuff, otherwise why didn't anyone until that point put a rotom in a boombox, really? Maybe it has to be engineered a certain way for it to work properly.

I like the idea that the pokemon world is at a point, but with reasonable effort it can be expanded. Not just "Take swift and add dark energy to it"

Ash focused fics, either SI isekai or just journeying with him always feel a cut below normal. I'm not saying fanfics take a lot of effort god knows what I'm writing currently isn't high literature but with ash not only do you get a whole plot like writing for the game but you get seasons of content. All with the ability to make smarter choices than the original ash.
Now you might say "hey wait that's easy, ash is an idiot" and you'd be correct. The writer doesn't need to be a genius, or even average intelligence to be smarter than ash. Ash also has like three different reasons for being stronger/better than others so boom another way for the writer to take an already existing trait and pump it up to 11. So ash fics come mostly prebuilt, a plot that mediocre writers can follow and idiot MC choices they can make better all while having powers/aura and even background characters already done.
Ash fics almost always feel more like Mad Libs than fanfiction to me. Hopefully I'll see something that disproves me soon but I'm not holding my breath. Waiting on you to publish your rape ancestors fic following ash, whoever you are

FFfag. Mentioned before, but in the MC's home town they have an annual festival that the royal family hosts. A bunch of low level pokemon are let loose in the castle courtyard and kids are allowed in to try and bond with one. Since most people in the setting only keep a single pokemon for their whole lives the kids aren't catching them but trying to convince them to willingly partner with them. The pokemon are a combination of pokemon specifically bred for this and wild pokemon that have been pacified enough to interact safely with children. Children usually look for a pokemon that will be helpful in the profession they expect to grow into. This also ensures that there is always a steady supply of potential trainers to join the Kingdom Knights, which is the larger non-noble half of the kingdom's knighthood. It also works as a semi 'chosen one' selector because kids that befriend select special pokemon can make more easily make claims to higher positions of power.

A side plot I currently have in my outline but may drop is that one point the MCs spend a brief time at a trainer school, and out of curiosity take an evaluation exam that grades their Trainer Rank. The MC scores in the second-highest category, considered the aces of aces and second only to Champions and the Elite 4. There's a decent amount of stories that try to draw attention to different battling styles, BoC, the Silver one, The battle frontier weather one, The Long Con, even fucking The New Normal.
Their success varies wildly, some like Normal and silver, don't do a great job of actually going beyond they used Taunt! (normal) or silver (his pokemon are SOOO brutal).
BoC had that whole thing with Zinnia and Lee, not really sure it was all that effective beyond making Lee look like a spineless sap (probably intended) and Zinnia look like an arrogant bitch (Also probbaly intended). So in BoC's case it revealed more character differences, not battling styes
The Long con has a discussion of battling styles that I think was decent, but the MC being soggy white bread really killed interest.

There's definitly a good way to show different battle styles, streetwise vs by the books fights but drawing attention to it can backfire. Like >>57900716 mentions and the examples back up you gotta think carefully about battle styles. cause more often than not you're either making the "smart" battler ineffective or making the "gifted" trainer look like an idiot.

Reading the nth story about a trainer freezing up (they think about how hard life is for 2000 words before they say anything to their pokemon). "Smart trainer" or "empathic trainer" freezes up in battle was barely ok the first two times. But it seems to have become a reoccurring staple.

It's ok to have educated people suck at the actual application of what they do working with "experts" IRL should show you that's often the case . I'd be leary of making it a main character, for the reasons that >>57900716 and >>57900978 mention.

On the otherhand having two different battle styles traveling together is nice. Even rivals with different approaches to these things is good. I rolled 1d11 for region to include Alola, Galar, and Paldea with 11 being the 'pick' option now. I messed up my counting and made this character based on Galar before realizing my mistake. But fuck it, I hate sunny weather and am likely gonna be travelling anyways.

I think my only issue is that I'm 10. I could deal with being a stupid 15 year old, but I think turned into a 10 year old will just make everything so much more difficult.
Larvitar isn't a great choice for minmaxing, but I just love Tyranitar and know that it would be a very difficult pokemon to capture normally. It doesn't have a great match-up into most of Kanto's gyms and until it reaches it's final evolution it's only marginally better than Geodude or Rhyhorn, so I'll need to fill out a team pretty quickly.
Skill wise, I really wanted to get pokeglot, and the others were just for convenience. I've always wanted to be able to talk to animals so this is just a no brainer.
Medical supplies is mostly because in an emergency situation, I'd rather have some medical supplies and have to get money later, rather than have money at the start and potentially run into issues immediately.
When it comes to later pokemon, Kanto has a lot that I like, so I'd be pretty happy to just see what I find while adventuring.

I think that in a case like this, you should let formatting work for you. You could put the flashback scenes in a clearly different but not distracting typeface (italic, typewriter, maybe a medium gray instead of black; AO3 lets you use HTML tags giving you many options) so it's clear that they're in a different context that is removed from the actual story around it. Some of your scene breaks transition to the flashback, some don't, and that makes it hard to follow because the reader has to figure out which context he's in on every break. Be nice to your readers.

I also don't see how the flashbacks are immediately relevant to the moments they appear at, but I easily could be simply not catching it. However, they need to be relevant because if you're just infodumping between scenes, it'll be more distracting than informative.

Basically, the flashbacks are for fleshing out Wol's relationships with his friends more since details about their friendship was pretty sparse in the first chapter. Especially with Jane, who barely appeared. It also is meant to inform why Jane and Wol take some of the actions they do as they cope with the grief of Garland's death.

And I just thought it was cool as I imagined it in my head, but that might be from a perspective that is too close to the story to see the flaws clearly. But some of the tips about format I'll definitely try to consider. I'm totally lost about what you mean by British syntax, and kinda confused about what you're trying to say with the school scene. I consider Gym Leaders to be politician light. Drayden being the mayor AND a gym leader implies that they are usually different roles. So I see Gym Leaders as not -officially- being a political position while still holding a lot of political power the way a big corporation does. As for the first chapter I definitely feel like the second chapter stuff would not fit well into it. The first chapter I tried to keep focus on hooking people with the inciting incident of the story so it doesn't really have room for the character exploration. Chapter 2 was meant to be slower paced before ramping the action back up towards the end of he chapter.

And yeah, I'm very aware that the reader is going to see things differently. But that's impossible to really gauge when you don't get feedback. That'd give time to establish that shit's a bit more real than she understood, figures things will get easier by joining with Wool, and then has a reason to get upset and pitch a fit upon realizing that Wall's going to be living even rougher. That starts at least some kind of attitude adjustment/emotional maturation arc in a functional way, rather than coming off as a stock trope that's going through the motions, with the first step being her having to suck it up if she doesn't want him to haul her back home right f'n now. I won't let Final Fantasy take the bullet for me, those contrivances are all me. The game is an NES rpg from before Square even knew how to make cutscenes that move or have NPCs with more than one dialogue box (they literally made 12 NPCs who stand in a circle to exposition dump the game's plot halfway through), so the game's plot is very bare bones and part of the fun of making a retelling of it is how much room there is to make the meat of the story around the skeleton provided.

It's actually kind of funny some of your points cause a lot of them I have the knee jerk reaction to say 'those things get explained in the chapter you skipped/later in the chapter'. But if you don't feel compelled to read those parts then it doesn't matter, because as a writer I've failed to write it interestingly enough for you to reach them on your own.

Wol is actually a common name in the (fanfic) setting, because a lot of parents name their kids Wol because it's prophesied that it will be the name of the Warrior of Light. So it sort of becomes a self fulfilling prophecy in that way. Mentioned in the first chapter.

Jane uses her full title sarcastically most of the time to purposefully be annoying. It's a call back to the first chapter.

As for the suggestions for Jane's development, I feel I handle it pretty well going forward. The scenes of her escaping wouldn't actually add much considering she can just walk out of the castle whenever she wants to. And she plays a significant part in the big battle of the chapter.

I kind of want to see what you have to say about the third chapted. My gut tells me you're gonna not be impressed.

Back to my work, I have a passing familiarity with a lot of concepts like act structures and properly breaking the rules after learning them. But I'm not really a study kind of guy for that kind of thing. I hate reading up on meta and optimal strategies in a game. I'd rather just jump in and get my ass kicked while refining how I play through experience.

So my approach to writing is kind of similar. I don't read a lot of fanfiction so my writing won't be influenced by it, meaning it will hopefully read as more distinct compared to other fanfics. I won't feel compelled to build upon, or subvert, what other people are doing. I just write what feels natural without 'standing on the shoulders of giants'.

This does have its flaws though. Since feedback is slow I don't actually know when I'm getting my 'ass kicked' so to speak to. This makes it hard to improve from a competitive stand point since I'm basically just doing fun combos against a training dummy. And the fact that I'm not building upon past works as much as other people means I'm more likely to write well worn and potentially tired concepts.

This may all just be simple mental gymnastics and cope, but I've often found myself skipping over a lot of writing I don't find interesting in the past. So I try to write in a way that makes more sense to my mind. I will give act structures and more a look though. Its the least I can do after you've taken the time to read and reply.

As for the Jane stuff, the story explicitly is sticking to Wol's point of view. A major theme of the story is exploring relationships and communication between people and pokemon, and the struggles and failures that come with that. Wol is a very introspective individual who often times fails to understand the people around him due to being caught up in his own thoughts. A big part of that comes with not knowing the inner thoughts of other people, and thus the need to improve his ability to communicate better with both people and pokemon.

For example, he can tell that -something- is wrong emotionally with Jane in chapter 2 but its all subtle unease from minor comments and annoyance at her recklessness. When it becomes clear in chapter 3 that Jane's actions are informed by her suffering from suicidal thoughts he realizes that they needs to be more clear and communicative about why they are doing the things they are doing. These sort of things would be lost if we understood Jane's point of view directly.

Well, if you're true to your method, you'll get what you want from it. But I feel like any compatible audience will come from the Final Fantasy side of the crossover. Thinking about it from that angle, I realize that part of my initial impression is that Pokemon aren't actually involved, except as a substitute battle screen interface with equally memorable but honestly lower quality music.

A strong subtext in Pokemon is Pokemon-as-friends versus Pokemon-as-weapons, with how one uses Pokemon exposing self and personality. Final Fantasy does the same but is based on if one carries a sword that's the size of a sheet of plywood or uses gorilla grip strength to suplex a steam engine. The weapons are things, the magics are personal powers. Pokemon moves weapon and magic into the Pokemon, making them independent yet harnessed by their masters. This creates something of a conflict in how the Chosen Oneness manifests. Excalibur only budged for Arthur because Chosen One, making the man and the weapon a unit, but Pokemon is about anyone can be the very best like no one ever was through effort. Your MC is a Chosen One in a context where anyone should be able to be. If none of those trillions of Wols don't make it, is that a fault in themselves, their stars, or the plot?

You know what I think…this should've been PMD 'mon following the FF plot beats in a slightly-Conquest setting. That would make Pokemon matter, keep Pokemon combat, reunify the characters with weapons/magic like normal JRPG, and would favor FF and PMD's small party design over mainline's MC v the world design. The downside is, inherent to PMD, you're writing humans in Pokesuits, but at least there's more Poke involved than occasionally having a species name blurted out and combat reading like a Pokemon Showdown chat log with fewer expletives.

I can't shrug hard enough. Just because those authors got paid to write badly doesn't mean that their bad writing should be perpetuated. Everything good in Pokemon is in the premise. Every unit of media that has come from it, canon and fanon, is a different cross section of the premise used as a foundation for storytelling. The quality of the result is a function of both the quality of that storytelling and the quality of the cross section selected.

In FFXIII-2 you can fight alongside monsters you caught btw, you can easily replicate that in Pokémon if you get creative, which is something lacking in this fandom.

Saying that magic, psychic, aura or even technology would make your team irrelevant is a straight up lie too, let's take this as an example.

Your trainer is some karate master that can punch rocks to dust like nothing and can run pretty fucking fast in short bursts but as fast as he is he can't reach a city in minutes like a flying type going at full speed, he can't get through a storm like a Lapras, put a group of people to sleep without fighting like an oddish or stun them, create a barrier or more.

Part of the premise is exploring this concept. There are actually many different versions of the prophecy told around the (fanfic) world, and wrestling with ideas of fate vs choice when we truly can't know which one is true. One prophecy says there is 1 Warrior of Light, one says 4 Warriors of Light, one says 6 pokemon are the Warriors of Light, etc.

And I am putting in effort to make sure that the pokemon are their own characters. In some ways, as a pokemon of legend, Blastoise is more Warrior of Light than Wol himself is. Wol is only who he is because of Blastoise. And so I put effort into exploring his relationship with Blastoise and how they communicate despite the language barrier. This goes for the other pokemon that join Wol's team. Each one has its own story, past, character flaws and growth. The struggles and successes of communicating with pokemon reflects Wol's communications with people. In some ways pokemon are easier to communicate with because their is no words to hide subtext, and in other ways its harder because of the inability to express more complex concepts without words.

I've never played PMD before other than to test a romhack for someone. It seems fun, but I just haven't gotten around to it. As for the pokemon in this story being expressions of their trainers its more like the pokemon are equal members of the party as the human characters. I actually picked the pokemon that joins Wol's team based on the player character classes from FF1. Blastoise is the Warrior, one is the Monk, White Mage, Black Mage, etc. Wol's role as the 'trainer' is more like being a squad captain. He isn't building a team based on his style. He's learning how to adapt as a leader to pokemon that each have their own styles. So a lot of those themes wouldn't hit the same in a setting like PMD.

A lot of Final Fantasy games have monster taming mechanics. 5 introduced Beast Master, a job class that battles by capturing and releasing monsters to do one use special attacks. It was reused in 11 the MMO as a pet based class where you can temporarily tame wild monsters or craft monster feed to summon specific NPC monsters, along with Summoners and Puppetmaster also being pet classes. Summoner is basically going around and fighting legendaries to earn the right to summon them in battle, and Puppet Master is a completely customizable little puppet pet. More robotic because you have to build parts for it in battle, but you do have to train its skills separately from yours.

The Tactics games have more direct monster taming mechanics where you recruit actual monsters to battle alongside the rest of your party. 13-2 actually has a pretty indepth monster taming system where your third party member is a monster and you can swap it out mid battle to change your parties current formation. Its even got things like powerful legendary monsters you can seek out and recruit, and a bestiary so you can try and catch them all.

Oh, and World of Final Fantasy is of course literally just FF's attempt to make a full on monster taming game. I haven't played that one yet, I need to.

But yeah, introducing human combatants and mages into pokemon doesn't take away from the pokemon. You just gotta make sure you balance them properly.

Moves that only make sense, or not move using to test their physical characteristics.

I actually have tried to make fantasy combat sport boardgames before but I never put a lot of effort into it. I know there are a few tabletop rpgs that have a sports game optional mechanic for the GM to run.

What are the limits of the sports here? Are they able to use moves on each other, on the ball? Which sport is it? All interesting things to think about.

If it was up to me, I think I would say 'Moves are free use on everything other than the other pokemon'. So they do whatever is within their powers to the field and the ball, but they can't directly cause injury to the other team. But setting the ball on fire before kicking it is fair game.

This way a wider variety of pokemon could be viable. Otherwise geodude could only be a goalie in soccer.

Duh. That applies to all feedback on writing. Critics aren't doing the writing, aware of which compromises have been made to get to where the story currently is at, don't have the same perspective, and haven't made any of the editorial decisions.
And that's the purpose: So the author can see the work from a different angle, from a reader's angle, which is impossible otherwise.
Any writer who just does what critics suggest shouldn't be writing. Any writer who dismisses any reader's perspective without consideration also shouldn't be writing. Feedback on writing is about using that alien point of view to see the work differently in hopes of finding ways to improve it on all sides.
