Roy's transition from the excited kid of the crew to judgmental cunt has been detrimental to the anime for me. His dynamic with Uruto sucks. I'd love if they had any form of back and forth but it really is just

It feels like we've skipped multiple key moments, jumping into this very cyclical and one sided dynamic. There's no interplay, just cool Roy and the fool they invented to make Roy look cool.

Well yeah, we obviously did, it's been a year. We'll find out more eventually, since we still don't know Ult's backstory. We also didn't get a proper backstory for Roy and Liko until later. Just be patient, I'm sure we'll find out more later. We still don't even know where the Lucario is from either.

I for one really like Roy's changes. He was very generic and boring before. There was no tension between him and anyone else. He just kinda existed and was friendly.
Now he actually seems like he has more than 3 working braincells. Ult's presence makes it very clear that Roy matured quite a lot in the least year, and his tendency to talk Ult's childish behaviour down shows that he's become more self-aware of his own actions and maturity. You could even say that Roy's annoyance with Ult is some sort of projection, in the sense that Roy becomes aware of his own childishness in the past.
