never ever
>Why do you think Pokรฉmon in PMD opt to use Lapras Liners instead of using flying-types?
like our own world air travel is fairly restrictive, being very sensitive to the weather, weight and size limitations and the fact that most flying 'mons are below average in size, compare lapras to corviknight (ties for second place with dragonite for being the largest non-legendary flying type, beaten only by gyrados) who despite being only a foot shorter weighs a bit over half of lapras (2.2m 75kg, 2.5m 220kg) resulting in a transport method that struggles to carry more than three adult humans and who requires a specialized carnage to actually transport more than two
contrast with lapras who can comfortably transport many adult humans and tow a barge behind them without losing a significant amount of speed
>Why do Pokรฉmon choose to sleep on hay instead of softer material or woven linen?
cost + availability + many 'mons being indifferent to softness

Working through my overly huge backlog of stories, don't know if this guy's still around but this is what I went through tonight https://rentry.co/Sterling1-7Redux

The story itself seems all over the place and maybe a little too edgy for me. The fight scene involving Blissey seems like it's there for no real reason as of yet and seems a bit confusing to include when the story's still introducing its main characters.
There's a few parts of it that seem to be getting ahead of itself, actually, like the dream involving the girl. I think both of these parts could work better had it come later on down the line.
I do think a Clamperl protag's an interesting idea though. Plus I do enjoy how descriptive the writer is. If he's still around, I'm curious of what more he could manage. Hope I don't sound too harsh, I'm not the best at criticism.

Playing more Gates after an 11 day gap. In the final stretch, so I'll probably wrap up the main story this weekend.
Entercards continue to intrigue me. Is it ever explained how they're made? I imagine they must be crafted with a rare material, and probably a special process too.
And if you use them by simply placing four of them in a pattern, doesn't that mean it should be easy for anyone to do, provided they own the required cards? It's treated like a challenge that demands a lot of training and practice, but I don't get what's so hard about it.

On some real shit, Deviantart's got some weird PMD fics. About what you'd expect from the site. I remember one where the protagonist was I think riolu. Maybe fennekin partner. Part of the plot was that humans are feared by natives cause they're almost always evil. Also the protag was able to shape shift into other pokemon on occasion.

Same author wrote another story that was based on Super. The thing is, though, Super hadn't released yet. He based his story on the fucking trailer and it was pretty generic as a result. I don't believe it made it past the first chapter.

I recommend if you have some free time, go to Deviantart, search Mystery Dungeon, filter for literature, and start exploring. It's pretty good cringekino, leaning mostly towards cringe

Same guy, but something like pic for the emeras. Made this both for example and discussion.
Regarding this tierlist for RTDX, I assert one skill in each red tier will bring you success.
Notorious Fasting and Leave Half are also good at elongating your survivability but are less reliable than Food Finder or Small Stomach. Food Finder is the best because small apples can also go to recruiting fainted Pokemon in the dungeon, and both Small Stomach and Notorious Restoration make it to where any seeds or berries are as useful as apples.
The reliable 3 hunger skills are significantly stronger than the 2 PP skills, but the PP skills when used well can prevent you from needing Elixers as you traverse the dungeons. Since they greatly nerfed basic attacks you almost always need moves and therefor PP to make it. On that note, PP Pouch is 9 times out of 10 better because it could always proct, but Squeeze Out requires you to use your last move's PP and there's a chance you don't get it back, eventually leading to the need of an Elixer, with PPP its biggest downside is how out of control the timing is, but walking around hallways will just give you enough rolls to get the PP you need.
Squad Up is better than Friendly when you're at max party size, and I don't believe you lose stacks when a pokemon faints because they are still on your current team list and can be revived, correct me if I'm wrong.
I think Mind Over Matter is bugged, if not it's so garbage.

I will have to reevaluate that one, it's one of my lesser tested skills. I cannot deny solo/lvl1 dungeons are a worthy consideration, I just do so few of them and have the lense of a full teamcomp.
To that effect I have also widley disregarded Devensive/Evasive Rhythm because they seem like they're banking on you having already taken a hit for a chance to be useful. At least Riled Up gices you a power boost and an immediate way to retaliate before retreating to saftey. Similarly I don't think Brawl works if you walk a Monster House into a corridor, so unless you intend to do a big room hitting move it sounds less than consistently helpful.

Another Gates update: maybe it's just me, but this ship tease felt like it came out of nowhere. It certainly has the potential to be a cute pairing, but I think they should've built it up more. It feels extra weird since Dunsparce already has a crush on Virizion, and there was even a scene where Dunsparce and Virizion sit together in the moonlight and share a tender moment together--and now the game starts pairing Virizion with Dunsparce's best friend instead. Poor Dunsparce, he don't get no respect.

posting help request if /pmdg/ wants to waste a few hours on Rescue Team.
For this run I went in with 20 max elixirs + tight belt and eventually recruited Cordelia (Lv 21 Chikorita) and Loops (Lv 25 Spinda).
We found an Escape Orb on F31. I was really just trying to grind the floors for fun but since I was close to F50 I figured I'd try getting a Chansey first... huge regret...
I made the mistake of stepping on a visible Pokemon Trap on F49 Monster house because I forgot it turns items to Pokemon (it usually does nothing when rooms are empty) and lost an Ice Beam. Loops was lost to the Dugtrio and while Fishe was asleep Cordelia kept spamming a useless PoisonPowder and I could do nothing.
Fishe survived alone and made it to the next floor on 30HP... I thought I'd recruit the Chansey and just leave so it would all be worth something, but an Azumarill took me out.
Overall Max Elixir + Tight Belt can be a fun way to do 99F dungeons (compared to the usual scarf speedruns) but is probably not worth doing.

On this episode of Gates: local pink blob makes a suicide pact. I'd already heard about this before, but it was my first time seeing the scene. Kinda crazy that they'd include a literal suicide cult in a Pokemon game for kids (then again, suicide was brought up in Sky's postgame too, so I guess there's some precedent for this subject matter). And I get that Munna always had her own doubts about the suicide pact, but I feel like she caved into the partner's argument and gave up on her mission too quickly. Also, it would've been nice to get some more concrete explanations about how exactly she and the other cultists lost all their faith in the world.

>>57951875
I interpret Umbreon and Espeon as a couple, but I can't remember if the game clearly shows them being in love or if they're just very close to each other.

I drew this a while ago, but I don't think I ever shared it, so I'll drop it here. I like how it turned out.
I'll also answer the thread questions:
>What grass-types do you think you could harvest food from?
Highly variable, I imagine. In some cases, like Tropius, they grow edible parts that can be safely removed (assuming the Pokemon is kindhearted and generous enough to offer them unlike certain Tropius out there). Other Pokemon may have edible plant-like parts, but they may not regrow and/or would require butchering to obtain, so that's not too feasible in PMD. Then there's all those Grass/Poison types, which are probably entirely inedible.
>Do you think we will get a new PMD game for the Switch 2? If so, what year do you think it will come out?
I hope we get one, but at this rate, who knows.
>Why do you think Pokรฉmon in PMD opt to use Lapras Liners instead of using flying-types?
Personally, I imagine Flying-types are regularly used for transport in PMD. However, there would be limitations due to weight, and it would have its own dangers that traveling by ocean (or land) would avoid.
>Why do Pokรฉmon choose to sleep on hay instead of softer material or woven linen?
At this point, it's just tradition.

I finished Gates to Infinity. Having previously played Super, Sky, and RTDX, that means I finished every main PMD game in one way or another. Nice to check that off my bucket list.

I've been sharing my thoughts on the game in the general so far, so I won't repeat too much. Overall, my gripes mainly are with the gameplay. The story and characters are mostly good. I appreciate the themes that the game tackles (and I'll admit I teared up at one point because the message hit hard for me personally), but the message really could've been handled better. Mainly, the characters constantly tell you that the world is growing dark and cold since there's so much hatred and distrust among people, but the game never shows this to you. Aside from a few crooks and villains, everyone is super friendly, which weakens the story's core message.

Some thoughts on the ending sequence:
Dragon Dance is OP and let me obliterate Kyurem and even the Bittercold with no effort. And Kyurem's boss theme is literally just Duel of the Fates, which made me laugh.
I enjoyed the part where the hero is overwhelmed but gets a second wind by hearing the voices of his friends cheering him on. It's cliche but cool.
It was strange how you fight the final boss by yourself. I know the partner's weakened by the Winds of Despair, but it would've been nice to have the duo fight together one last time.
The V-Wave was my type when I faced the Bittercold, which was kino. I like to imagine Victini adjusted the V-Wave to help the hero for the final battle.
Lastly, the fact that everyone is doomed to forget the hero when he leaves is very cruel. It never happens in any other games, and I don't think the Voice ever explains why the hero must be forgotten, so it kinda feel like it was just thrown in as an extra emotional gut punch. Even so, the final frism message was very nice and touching.

I'll play the postgame later, and share more updates when I do.

>Why do you think Pokรฉmon in PMD opt to use Lapras Liners instead of using flying-types?
I think it's just a situation of not having many good transportation oriented flying-types in the generations PMD has included. Dragonite was the Pokรฉmon anime's premier courier, but those guys are rare so you can't make an entire taxi system out of them. Also, heights. If you don't hold on to Dragonite, you fall. Even if it catches you, you're not going to be willing to make a return flight.
>Why do Pokรฉmon choose to sleep on hay instead of softer material or woven linen?
I was gonna say they probably can't make that much linen, but everyone and their mother has a scarf, so I'm just gonna say that's because they use linen for accessories.

Welcome, Crunch-anon! So glad to see you put out a story!

I never really wrote reviews publicly or provided constructive feedback, something I think would be great if the thread had more of, so I suppose this is me trying to be the change Iโ€™d like to see. I will admit going into the stories with this in mind does somewhat diminish my enjoyment of it so I donโ€™t know if Iโ€™ll do this very often, but here I am nonetheless. Also, huge kudos to the anons who do provide reviews. Yโ€™all carry this thread!

Firstly, starting with some constructive criticism:
The story definitely could have gone with a second read through. There are some issues with grammar such as lack of capitalization at the beginning of sentences and punctuation (among which semicolons could readily fix) but itโ€™s certainly nothing Iโ€™m not guilty of doing, and for your first story itโ€™s not too great a deal. These did somewhat make the story a bit harder to read naturally for myself, but again theyโ€™re not too detracting. Unfortunately, that canโ€™t be said for the occasions the story slips into second person, each time which took me off guard. These did pull me out of the story more than I wouldโ€™ve anticipated and, unless Iโ€™m missing something which is very much possible, seemed wholly writing errors. Grammar aside, I do think a bit more description for the sparring match between Crunch and Helva couldโ€™ve been used as well as a bit more time spent on Ursaringโ€™s inebriated vulnerability since I felt that had great potential, but nothing too crazy. Again, I do hope Iโ€™m not too harsh with this, but hopefully this can be kept in mind for future stories which I very much look forward to reading.

As for the story itself:
I have to admit this is quite intriguing, especially for a first story!

I do like how you hook the reader with Crunch in the aftermath of some defeat while also allowing him to appropriately reminisce about the past, which the rest of the story follows. Also, I cannot emphasize how impressed I am by your introduction of the concept of dungeon sickness. Clover stories have a distinct separation between feral and sentient Pokemon with few exceptions, and yet to me knowledge no story ever addressed the mechanic of being able to recruit mons in dungeons, which I presume this would allow. It also adds interesting flavor to the world that I think is always appreciated. I do hope this is a bunch of foreshadowing because this concept is one Iโ€™d love to see more of. As for the characters themselves, I like the dual dynamic between Helva and Crunch. Itโ€™s good to see how they started close and have a bit of a different shift of priorities as time goes on which leads to the question posed at the beginning of โ€œwhy is Crunch not with Helva?โ€ The dynamic you introduce with the Guild and Team Arctos is also really unique and the taking into account of logistics is, again, something I donโ€™t think Iโ€™ve seen before. Really love seeing the little details put into these kinds of stories; it really makes the whole world feel a bit more real which I truly enjoy! Aside from my aforementioned gripes, I do generally enjoy Crunchโ€™s straightforward narration while it also allows him to put forth his thoughts about his now-missing teammate alongside his perspective on other things in the world, though perhaps thatโ€™s just me being biased regarding first-person narration. The battle at the end, too, despite being rather short, was nice to read in Crunchโ€™s narrative voice. Indeed, itโ€™s rather quick pace felt appropriate considering Crunchโ€™s relative apprehension to combat when compared to his partner.

(Sorry for spamming the thread; itโ€™s seems Iโ€™m overly verbose even in reviews, go figure.)

Again, I do like how you get into the head of Crunch! I do really like your other characters, too, and am very very excited to read more of them all and seeing what chain of events leads from where the story ends to where the story began!

In sum, Wave Six is looking good with Crunch-anon here and Buoy-anonโ€™s story from a few threads ago! I am extremely excited to see what both of your stories (which seem to be series meaning thereโ€™s more to be written, yippee!) as well as (hopefully) other stories in-progress/in-concept from lurkers can bring to the table. Clover Guild is such a delight for me to partake in for both writing and reading, so I canโ€™t say enough how wonderful it is to see new contributions from new anons!

I agree. Itโ€™s rare to get detailed reviews like yours in these threads, but theyโ€™re very valuable--both for the authors themselves and for other writers who can learn from the feedback.
On that note, Iโ€™ve been working on some reviews lately. First, some stories I beta-read. Iโ€™ll (try to) keep it brief since I already gave these authors some feedback before.

โ€œNational Dex Pokegraphic, Chapter 3: Sacred Spirit Vigilโ€ by Invalid Value-anon
>https://rentry.org/zangoosechapter3
Iโ€™m always impressed by the descriptiveness of your writing. I appreciate how you portray native Pokemon having their own culture. It was cool to get more backstory for your characters. The fight scene had good action, but it felt too long and the kooky dialogue skirted the line between entertaining and excessive. However, the bad guys put up more of a fight compared to the rough draft, which is an improvement. Lastly, I still think you overuse epithets for characters (i.e., โ€œawkward polecatโ€, โ€œfurry book-bearerโ€, etc.) instead of just using their name/species. It can get distracting. Overall, this chapter developed Serpes and the overarching plot of your story nicely, and Iโ€™m glad you overcame the struggle and finished it.

โ€œCircus Freaks: The Anchor Town Showโ€, by Flareon-anon
>https://rentry.org/AnchorTownShow
I liked the conversation with Zoroark and Elekid. It was neat to learn how Kennyโ€™s been training and watch him use his psychic powers in his performance. Seems like you tweaked the magic trick and made him struggle a bit more, which is good, but the climax could have been more satisfying if you had him face even more difficulty. The current climax is alright, though.

IIRC, another anon said your characters arenโ€™t developing enough. While I agree things are moving slow, Althi and Ari made notable progress here, and Pirthโ€™s conflict with Althi was good for his character. As for dโ€™Alin, I still donโ€™t really have a grasp on his personality and character arc, and Iโ€™m not sure this chapter developed him all that much.
All things considered, this three-act chapter was done well. The charactersโ€™ conflicts and emotions are engaging and interesting, and you depict their feelings nicely. Althi is clearly in the wrong (and crossed the line here), but she has realistic reasons for being this way. Iโ€™m particularly invested in Ariโ€™s struggle. Her depression and desperation were portrayed brilliantly (especially in her first scene in Part 3). The parts you added for the final draft have some grammar issues, but they definitely improved the story overall. I enjoyed the extended ending with Ari and Booker. Itโ€™s so cute how she now considers Booker a friend and allows him to use her nickname.

โ€œCrunchatize Meโ€, by Crunch-anon

Helva/Crunch have clear goals and contrasting personalities, and I like your worldbuilding about teams and dungeons. Your use of commas has improved since the rough draft, but still needs some work. And there are still some spots where you slip into second-person POV, plus a lot of places where you put punctuation outside the quotes.

...

And now for some stuff I read for the first time:

โ€œThe Great Bulk: Sweet Reliefโ€, by Makuhita-anon

I donโ€™t have much to talk about here, but itโ€™s a decent little story with some chill vibes. Good to see Makky and Asana having a talk about his decision to spare Lombre, and itโ€™s nice to see your team hanging out with guildmembers now.

โ€œForever in Greenโ€ by Reunianon

Great job depicting the interactions between Al and Beth (you always portray their relationship very well). While their initial reason for pretending to be human felt weak and unrealistic to me, it was cool to see the duo discuss it in ch4 and decide what to do about their deception. I also liked their talk at the end of ch5, since it was wholesome and added some nice insight to Beth. The way you incorporated the Q&A questions in ch5 was smart, too.

The writing was descriptive but got purple and overly sentimental at times, like the description of the morning in ch4 and Alโ€™s thoughts at the very end of that same chapter. Similarly, some dialogue felt stilted, particularly Jung and Saraโ€™s. Speaking of those two, the part where Al/Beth got lost and met Linoone/Debby and Jung/Sara felt unnecessary and kinda hindered the pacing, since it didnโ€™t develop the plot or characters much. On the other hand, I liked their discussion about why people turn to crime, which tied into Al and Bethโ€™s pasts nicely.

I had some issues with the logic of the plotโ€”for instance, why Al and Beth left town entirely if they were just looking for a store, and why Charlotte and her friends had a long talk about private matters right in front of waiting customers. Similarly, I found it odd how itโ€™s treated like such a huge deal when this duo joins the guild, considering most newcomers merge into the group with no fanfare. I wish there was more justification for these guys to get such a special welcome compared to everyone elseโ€”for instance, they couldโ€™ve made a bigger lie and claimed to be celebrities/heroes instead of just regular humans. That couldโ€™ve been an interesting angle to try.

Regardless, these were some nice chapters. I look forward to your teamโ€™s continued interactions with the guild.

That was a lotta words, but I hope everyone finds the feedback helpful.

Hello!

Me, Phanpy-anon, vee-anon, and Togetic-anon have worked on a new Clover Guild rom hack over the last 3 weeks for the SkyTemple hackjam. It's called "Togetic's Very Special Episode". You can download a patch for it here to play it, make sure to patch it onto a Clean USA EoS rom.

Toge, the shy quartermaster of the notorious Clover Guild, typically resigns himself to his unsung duties of keeping the guild's storage neat and tidy. Despite his past failures at adventuring, he decides to take a chance on a treasure map his boisterous guildmate finds. Little does Toge know, he's about to embark on a very special journey...

Just finished playing and I have thoughts. This is the first romhack I've ever played, so I don't really have anything to compare it to, but it was pretty kino.

While the story itself is great and the pacing was just right, the real standout to me was the incredible backgrounds for all the different scenes. Vee-anon did a fantastic job making each area of the journey feel totally unique with a great variety of colours and shapes. His skill with light and shadows is above reproach and I aspire to be that good some day.

Major fucking spoilers ahead do not look at this if you haven't finished playing it.

The story is cute and simple, with a satisfying, if slightly predictable twist at the end. As soon as they met the rival team, I immediately started stocking up on violent/vile seeds, knowing that Gill would not be able to bulldoze them in the way he had been throughout the dungeons, since he is extra weak to both water and ground types.

I actually really enjoyed the gameplay itself, in the way that you were forced to rely on your partner to actually deal the killing blows, while setting up support to help position him in a way that would let him deal the hits you needed him to. I liked that this was actually part of the plot and brought up during the cutscenes early on. The ability to spam metronome from the sidelines was a fun way to keep things interesting for you as the player character. Toge learning his damaging magical leaf didn't really help in the way I thought it would, but that's ok since it was more for the sake of character development than for gameplay, which was a nice little moment for him.

My only real critique story wise is the "Gill getting injured with an apparent broken leg", which is a bit of an old hat cliche that didn't make a lot of sense and had very little bearing on the story other than a small bit of emotional drama that sort of fell flat for me. It seemed sort of brushed off right away to allow the team to get to the final fight without having to acknowledge the fact that Gill should have really been out of commission and unable to travel through the final dungeon. I totally understand the need for the pair to get to the treasure together as a team, as the journey truly is the real treasure all along.

I feel like the broken leg could have been replaced with a less immediately threatening injury like a concussion from the fall. A bad bump on the head is still a very serious injury that's potentially less hindering in the moment, giving you more room to suspend your disbelief that Gill could grit his teeth and get through the final leg of the journey without too much trouble. But really, none of that matters all that much and didn't affect my enjoyment of the story as a whole.

Petal-Purr No.57972449 >>57972875

My only other slight gripe is that I felt like the text went by too fast during Toge's autistic rants. I wanted to fully read what he had to say, but it sped through so fast I missed some of it and had to go back to fully take in his glorious sperging. I might have had my text speed set too fast though, I'm not very technical when it comes to that sort of stuff.
In terms of really minor stuff I really liked, I loved Toge's personalised Team Cozy rug in his room that you just know he made himself. I also liked the tiny bit of foreshadowing where Toge lifts Gill out of the tiny crater, before having to pull off a more extreme version of the same feat later, in a much more heroic fashion. That was a nice moment that really showed off how useful Toge really is in a pinch and that he has skills that are more impressive than he would like to believe; that's he's always been stronger than he gives himself credit for.

The sheer volume of guildmon cameos that you managed to squeeze in is incredibly impressive, especially with how naturally you had them all placed around the guild doing a huge amount of different things. It was fun going around reading everyone's little bits of dialogue, though it made me realize how lackluster the dialogue I wrote for my characters specifically was. I feel like I fucked up and missed a big opportunity to do more with them, but that's on me for not paying enough attention when I had the option to do more than I realized. I wish I'd revised it because their dialogue is clunky and retarded. Not that it matters at all, since literally all of that is totally optional. It's a learning experience I guess. Team Petal-Purr wins the award for most boring bitches in the whole guild. Not me accidentally proving that the first all-female team have nothing interesting to say.

Also this Houndour sprite I edited myself is fucking dogshit and I regret making it and wish I hadn't bothered at all.

Amazing story!!!! Very well done for a first intro, writing was high quality and smooth.

As for any story, I note my thoughts down as I read, so I'll go through them

SPOILERS BELOW

>dungeon description
The way dungeons are interpreted in your story are my favourite out of all clover guild stories! it's personal taste, but, heavily game-ified dungeon descriptions with literal corridors and stairs kind take me out of the immersion. But yours are believable and feel real. The idea that they are vague areas that mutate and where you can get lost in fits so much better in a story. Phanpy also writes his dungeons in a similar way. Also he lore surrounding them is so cool. Dungeon sickness is a sick (haha) concept. Just the idea that someone can get lost in a dungeon for days or WEEKS and slowly lose their mind and identity... that's terrifying. And the years-long flash-forward at the beginning implying that crunch got lost for days.... ;-; very spooky
Also, the concept of some pokemon being sensitive to borders of mystery dungeons is really really cool

>Chomp! I bit down on the fin atop her head.
>Helva shot up, furious, freshly bitten head fin nearly clipping my chin. โ€œCrunchatize Me Part 1, what the hell was that for?!โ€
that was my favorite line in the movie :p

>Non-delvers were responsible for communicating with the guild, prepping for rescue operations, and negotiating rates for jobs.
that's a cool idea, I don't think anyone explored the work involved processing everything going from a client doing a job request to dungeon exploration.

There were so many cute imagery in this story omg. Makes me want to draw them all it's just so cute.
>Ursaring hoisting crunch up and saying a cheery no to putting him down
awwww

>I snatched up a bandana in my mouth. It felt right, I stood proud with my chest puffed out with the bandana held out expectantly towards Helva.
Make me melt omg

I played it and was greatly impressed. Fantastic background art, good comedy, and even some touching moments. Gill is such a good therapy dog. There was so much cleverness in the writing, and so many items and characters to interact with. My main critiques are that the story was rather basic and predictable, and I wish Gill was impaired more by his injury (his stats were reduced, but he didn't feel much weaker). Even so, this was a very thorough and polished hack, and everyone did a wonderful job. Congratulations on finishing it!

Amazing work from everyone! All the custom assets combined with all the cameos and nods to so many character stories have really captured what I imagine the guild environment is like.
The usage of the top screen was also well done, and I have a hard time imagining other hacks doing better at that.

I also like how, much like the previous hack, it is not just a "sidestory". Instead it contains full-on moments of development for the characters.

I tried out the Blooming Silence hack jam hack and I wish the hack was better. It had really great cutscene scripting that honestly felt even more polished than the vanilla games, but a lot of it felt pretty wasted on a really weirdly done narrative. If anyone cares about spoilers for it, the hack has you playing as Arceus, who's trying to understand mortal pokemon better. It starts off well, with him meeting a Meowth who's house is a mystery dungeon, and the two have good banter as Arceus is sort of an autist who speaks in absolutes and Meowth is just baffled by him. But then once that dungeon is over Meowth disappears, then the next few parts are pretty much the same, Arceus meets new pokemon then at the end they disappear and don't remember him next time around if they show up again. The problem is Arceus doesn't really do anything the entire story. All he does is show up some place, meet people, basically just proclaim he's Arceus and other characters tell him how he can feel more mortal in about 100 textboxes more than is required. So many parts feel like Arceus or another character says something and gets their point across, then the next 10 textboxes are them rewording that one thing. And the entire time the hack is trying to be philosophical about gods and what it means to be one while trying to tell an honestly extremely simple story (God figures out if he loses some of his powers, he learns what it's like to be mortal.) I wish Arceus had more agency in the story, the only time he actually does really anything instead of just being an onlooker is in the final boss fight where he fights a shadow version of himself in a very forced scene, and by that point all of the side characters you might actually care about since they have fun banter are completely gone and you just have this boring brick wall of a character who's done nothing up until this point that you're supposed to feel something for.

If the hack was Arceus getting a merry band of random shitters with good banter it would've been more enjoyable, or at least they could've tried cutting down on the philosophical yapping so the nicely written banter could've stood out more. And as good as the cutscene design is, 90% of the cutscenes are just the characters yapping with not much interesting going on, so honestly even that feels kinda lackluster, especially since the hack has a really amazingly done intro cutscene with really nice custom art (but that intro is completely irrelevant to what happens in the hack and none of the pokemon there actually show up in the actual narrative lol)

It feels like a lot of wasted potential since I don't hate the idea of Arceus being the protagonist, and the side characters were actually enjoyable.
Also the dungeon design kinda sucked so I can't even recommend playing it for the gameplay. First dungeon starts off with you shitstomping everything as max level arceus, then you get nerfed into being a weak fairy who only knows sketch, so you have to buff up your moveset using sketch and TMs. Problem is the dungeons feel too easy while also just having random bullshit moments, like monster houses being too common which is just a game over if you haven't gotten a room-hitting move yet. It's a cool gimmick on paper but it feels like they didn't really playtest it much. Final dungeons have a neat gimmick idea of letting you recruit dungeon monsters but the recruitment rate was so low I only ever got a single lowtad to join me. Maybe I just got unlucky, but I just wasn't having any fun as someone who usually actually enjoys PMD gameplay.

I don't wanna be too hard on it since the presentation is really nice, but I really wish it had more to it than that.
The post-credits joke did make me laugh even if it was completely irrelevant to the actual story though.

I think bugs have a similar lifespan to the average Pokemon, which is good for Sneasel.
But yeah, it must suck for the few Pokemon that live a really long time, like Ninetales or Florges. I wonder if they tend to group together so they can be with other long-living species and not worry about all their friends dying early.

I played "Midsummer Night's Dance", one of the Skytemple hackjam entries. Not the best hack I've played, but it wasn't too bad. I'll share my thoughts (no major story spoilers).

There were some neat tilesets and backgrounds, though I'm not sure if they were custom-made by the dev. The top screen, which was the gimmick of the hackjam, was used decently well for scenery in cutscenes. The story didn't take itself seriously--there was a lot of quirky and "lol so random" humor, and the plot didn't make the most sense, but there were some cute and wholesome parts, as well as a couple good jokes. There were quite a few typos in the script, so more proofreading would've been beneficial. The difficulty felt too low, partially thanks to the plentiful items. Some characters got introduced without any buildup, and the plot involved that one annoying trope where people refuse to allow the protagonists to explain themselves, even though a simple explanation would solve the entire problem immediately.

There were a couple puzzles, which was a neat idea, but it was possible to get softlocked on them. It seems like the game spawns a required item in your inventory when you enter the floor with the puzzle, so if your inventory is full, you don't get the item and you're just stuck there. I learned that the hard way. It would've been better if the items were simply lying around for you to pick up. Also, if you fail a dungeon or choose to give up, the game softlocks on a black screen.

Overall, the hack wasn't great, but it also wasn't terrible, and I was able to get some enjoyment out of it. Admittedly, part of the enjoyment was because the hack had a theme of bananas, which is inherently funny (and even funnier with our character Tropius in mind). I hope this jam was a good experience for the dev, and you keep improving in your future hacks.

But fuck it I'll sum up my thoughts real quick

The "completion" level of the hacks this year is definitely higher, there's maybe one or two hacks that are broken or incomplete, but compared to last year it feels like they're a lot more uninspired.

Tainted's hack showed really good choreography and character writing, but it's in service of a story that just doesn't work and isn't interesting. Characters also tend to yap like it's YIIK and the dungeons themselves were pretty unbalanced and filled with monster houses with no reliable way to deal with them. This hack was probably my biggest disappointment since I'm a huge fan of Tainted - he worked alone this year so maybe it was just too much to have to juggle literally everything by himself. Stories with Arceus are also just impossible to make interesting, I feel, no matter how well you're able to write him, though I do believe if he took a different approach to what the story was about it could have been quiite a bit better.

Multiple hacks this year are just ripping off of Deltarune (Soul Secrets and One More Wish). Le liminal bullshit that cuts to the chase without the proper setup that Deltarune and Undertale puts a lot of effort into doing, so it comes off as edgy cringe shit. No, I don't care about this character you wrote horribly for the last 5 minutes, believe it or not, no I'm not surprised when something fourth wall breaking happens afterwards, fuck off. One More Wish is particularly frustrating because it has a very unique and cool mirror puzzle gimmick, then makes negative effort to tie that in with the story whatsoever. What's a ludonarrative? What is having any attempt at tying the story in with the game? Deltarune is cool so I'll put things people talk about on Twitter about it into my game! No, you cannot critique this, do NOT stifle my creativity chud! Jesus fucking christ. And I don't even have to mention anything about Soul Secrets besides: "Soul" and "Deltarune". Fill in the rest yourselves.

Cutting Ties -

Nothing more to say, others posted other screencaps from it as well.

True Courage was a massive letdown after last year's entry from Smingle (who made Let The Music Play). I was hoping that, having learned not to put random sporklike bullshit into his hack in the form of Miror B, that Smingle could put out a really good hack. Instead, he put out an incredibly mid and uninteresting hack that has really shit worldbuilding (in a hack that's only an hour). Highlights include puzzles where you play the piano (no sound plays of course) and complete circuit diagrams, and raiding an underground science laboratory with a "novice" character who has a minmaxxed moveset for Phione Dew. I'm pretty sure one of his new team members is to blame for this, since they've put similar "i fuarking love science" shit in their hacks in the past. Huge letdown, and if my hunch is correct the hack coulda been a lot better with less chefs in the kitchen.

Nocturne of a Presumed Prodigy
Horribly balanced. Moltres shows up with no ceremony as a random mook in dungeons. Filled with "puzzles" where you use a pounce orb or whatever to cross a gap, but this causes softlocks very easily if you miss an item. Crashes if you lose in a dungeon to try to undo the softlock. Writing is of a similar caliber (see picrel). Probably the shittiest hack of the jam.

The Tower
It's just a grind fest. There's 10 levels, each level has 3 dungeons, one to grind money, experience, or items. You can only go to the next level after beating the boss for a level. You have 100 days to beat it, each dungeon run consisting of one day. Once at the top you have to grind 9999 poke to buy the medicine to save your father. The story isn't very good either, and basically just serves to get you into the gameplay, which is OK i guess if it wasn't just a grind fiesta. Reminds me of seven shartphonies with the setup, which should serve as a severe warning. Very weird entry for a jam, not really worth your time.

The Perfect Mix
Another entry from the King of Mid, Okami. Follows the random Zigzagoon from Spinda's Cafe drunkenly moving between a bunch of different dungeons, even starting the gameplay itself off at the top of destiny tower (xddddddd so funny). Despite being a drunken layabout, Zigzagoon has an insanely cracked moveset having Pin Missile, Agility, Headbutt, and a custom move that causes confusion but heals and applies protect (You can get persim bands btw). The story is eye rolling, the jokes are basic, and the ending is predictable.

By the way, I haven't mentioned it yet, but like none of these hacks have made any serious effort to use the top screen. Perfect mix for example just has a couple of pelippers flying overhead for one scene, and that was its only use despite having multiple opportunities to make use of it. This motherfucker coulda used the topscreen to have him fall out of destiny tower onto the walrein, or when he gets ejected from the volcano shoot out of it onto the top screen. EASY slamdunks and these people still just try to go for pathetic layups.

Urgh. I wish people tried harder. I wish people SELF REFLECTED a bit more. All I'm gonna hear from all this shit is a complaint.

Midsummer Night's Dance
Very sporklike hack, for better or worse. Features Gengar stealing the moon for Munkidori so he can grow Moonanas, so Clefable has to go on a journey to get the moon back where it belongs. The plot kinda gets even more randumb from there, but you can read >>57980409 for a better review honestly.

The Phantom Thief
Someone already posted a screencap from, see >>57979420. I don't think I need to say much else about this hack, except it had a topscreen gimmick where I was supposed to use it to guide the gardevoir out of a jail, except it didn't work and I had to blindly guess how to do it. Great.

Detective Noivern
Irdkwia definitely makes interesting hacks, though I wish he'd actually finish this one. Using his ASM skills he's made a lot of changes to PMD and its UI to basically turn it into ace attorney investigations. from what little there is in the demo, it seems he makes good enough use of Pokemon mechanics and worldbuilding to not make it a paintjob, which is nice. Too short to accurately judge, but if the mystery ends up being solid and continues the way it seems to be going, might actually be pretty neat. Pretty weird we have two ASM oscar bait detective games in the last two hackjams, though.

Now for hacks I actually enjoyed.

Waves of Nostalgia
Cute world building, nice character writing, and AMAZING art. The gimmick here is that it turned PMD into a VN, and anytime you talk to anyone, their emotions are beautifully drawn art on the top screen. The gameplay consists of helping out the townspeople in a small village with their troubles through sidequests each day. It was definitely a vibe (though a bit long and meandering). I got immersed enough in the world and characters which is all I can ask for from a hack that aims to be a VN like this one. The ending was probably the only hack with a good twist (because this theme was so shitty and also fucking the same as last years if you think about it hard enough), and even then the twist is "they were dead the whole time!!!". Only reason it's decent is because they actually allude to it just enough that you don't see it coming but it makes a lot of sense in retrospect, so good job to the devs for pulling that off.

The hack has downsides - there was a good amount of text formatting issues, and sometimes the screen would glitch out when they transitioned maps because they kept forgetting to fade out between transitions. The writing, while good, I still think could have been a little bit better, mainly because it doesn't set things up properly between the mother and your player character before trying to pop open the emotional champagne, but maybe I'm just too cynical. The choreography was also quite weak, very heavily relying on the topscreen art to do all of the heavy lifting, but given how nice the art is it makes sense they want to make heavy use of it. The gameplay was also very token, and there were some hiccups with setting top/bottom screen textboxes here and there.

Overall, this is one of the hacks most worth playing. If I had to pick a hack that I think was going to win, it's probably this one, but we'll see what judges think.

Fire Island Fireworks Festival
This is the sleeper entry of this jam, easily. Made by one guy, has a cute story, some simple but nice/endearing world building, a nice custom map to explore, ties the top screen into his story quite nicely, and shows some unique dungeon gimmick ideas (even if they ended up being a bit aids to actually play). Genuinely learned a couple of tricks about how to do things from playing it, and this is the guy's first completed hack. The game definitely has flaws: quite a few typos (he's ESL so it's somewhat forgiveable), the writing could be a bit better especially with how it leads up to the ending, the final dungeon is quite obnoxious, and the bit right before the ending is rather weak and could do with some rewriting. But this hack actually showed a lot of promise, enough to overpower the cynicism I have playing these jam entries, and I think if this guy improved a bit more he could make something truly amazing, my hat's off to this guy. The dark horse of the jam easily.

THAT'S RIGHT, KING JOJORETROGAMER MADE HIS RETURN

Motherfucker got on an alt, posted some absolute schizobabble, and dropped a hack in the submissions channel about an hour before it closed. Hack consisted of a Sky Peak edit turned into some lego strategy game paint job. Has the typical jojoisms of playing madlibs with vanilla dialogue, replacing random words with pussy, fuck, shit, etc. I don't think this one had porn (i.e. dick or pussy showing) in it, but, it still had a lot of gooner images in it. Oh, I nearly forgot, every dungeon in Sky Peak was 99 floors.

He got back on ANOTHER ALT about 30 minutes later, posted ANOTHER hack. This time, it came with a 6 gigabyte rar file that was password locked. Playing the hack (which was the standard jojo affair of a shitty beach cave edit, (this time with lots of backgrounds replaced with disgusting ass porn). It would reveal the password for the rar was "IHateJojo". The rar was probably just his downloads folder. It was full of like, porn, random games and PMD hacks, and a digimon porn game, and a few other random things. Thankfully there was nothing in there that would get the party van called on me for accidentally stumbling upon, but god there was a lot of gross shit. Unfortunately, no hidden holy grail of a previously unfound jojo hack in there from what I saw.

I can grab put up some links for the xdeltas for these if anyone wants, but I will warn you they're very low quality to actually play, and are full of porn.

Characters refer to him as sir sometimes and maโ€™am other times, because sheโ€™s okay with people using any gender for him. Sheโ€™s even okay if people randomly change what gender they refer to him as, like Iโ€™ve been doing here.
It feels really forced and unnecessary.
