The games are too limiting in scope and it doesn't help that the first couple of games, regions were based off of tiny ass areas until we rocketed up in size in xy since Kalos is just the country of France. You can fit the first four regions all comfortably in the state of California and still have room leftover.

Classes for Penny at Naranja Academy had ended. The short and slightly chubby Pokémon trainer was heading back to the dorms for the day. It was currently three in the afternoon and Penny had her normal lunch and breakfast, yet for the last hour her flabby belly was groaning so loud you'd think she was part whale.

Her pale belly wasn't super fat, but some people have asked if she was pregnant. Penny pinched her chub and sighed, while correcting her round-framed glasses. Penny's cute ass was hidden behind a clear skirt and a pair of dark gray booty shorts. Her short legs were completely covered by dark gray tights with red X's and blue rectangles scattered around. Penny was leaving the academy to find some tasty snacks to bring back to her dorm, but the starving, voracious girl didn't have to walk that far to find something yummy to eat.
Penny heard the idle chatter of older women to her left, making her glance over. Three women were standing at the sides of the gate that leads into the Academy. Immediately, Penny recognized one of the women, being she was a Pokémon champion.

Smart? I guess, Fate mages are pretty much -mystery scientists- in a sense. But whats really important for mages is talent, which usually comes down to inheriting and building upon your families magic crest aka the family heirloom tattoo. So more important would be something like old bloodlines.

So I can see Lance and Cynthia being old blood mages. Could also explains why Claire is such a bitch, cause she is salty that her cousin gets the Magic Crest of their family.
