Has anyone good custom B2W2 sprites of May to recommend?

Been planning to make some experimental sprites by combining FRLG and B2W2 ones basically putting the Gen3 heads onto the Gen5 bodies, so their proportions are more realistic, but there's unfortunately nothing official for pre-Gen5 protagonists (aside from Red). And the ones I've found seem amateurish in style. I don't know if there are any BW or B2W2 Beta sprites.

I'd say facial features are the easiest way. Ruby has a characteristic eye shape, with sort of sharp eyelashes, and the eyes are red. Also he might be drawn with his forehead scar or glasses. Sapphire has her lil fangs, the eyes are a much more vibrant blue than in the games.
Also their outfit colours are different. Sapphire of course is often drawn in her blue outfit, Ruby's one has less of the black/dark blue that Brendan's does in the games. For example, the "headband" part of the hat is black with a red pokeball on Brendan but red with a white pokeball - or really more like a semicircle - on Ruby.

It's more complicated than that, even if both of them keep all their clothes on. Because like Sapphire, Ruby changes his clothes a lot but his visual differences compared to his game counterparts are much more subtle. And that's without taking into account different fanartists' art styles (where they might ignore Yamamoto's very specific eye shapes style, or how some people draw game/anime May with fangs as a style choice, and others somehow forget to draw Sapphire's fangs)

The easiest hint is that Ruby and Sapphire's clothes nearly always match. Because Ruby's so down bad he keeps tailoring these matching couple outfits. So usually if Sapphire is wearing her Emerald alt outfit (the blue one), if Ruby's there too then he should also be in his Emerald alt outfit (the red one).

But since Ruby's clothes change less dramatically than Sapphire's, fanartists mix up Ruby's clothes more often. Can't blame them because even Yamamoto accidentally colored Ruby's headband wrong once (green instead of red in an Emerald arc panel) and some Twitter autist had to correct him.

And yeah Yamamoto's art is only getting worse unfortunately

The weirdest Sapphire interpretations are where westerners make her act emotionless (since "stoic = masculine = cool = better" I guess) when in canon she's almost defined by her extreme emotionality from day 1. Even that single first panel of her in Tarzan mode is just her roaring, she doesn't hold back and expresses everything, which is why her later falling in love and confessing to it is where her existing emotionality crosses with her newfound bravery (vulnerability, being willing to risk getting her feelings hurt). She's literally a sperg, her emotional temperament is both a strength and a weakness while also being a stereotypically female trait: both loving but also impulsive/irrational sometimes.

Canon Ruby is the complete opposite, he's emotionally repressed which is an ironically stereotypically male trait, and also has its pros and cons. It helps him lie, wear masks or look cool/unaffected by things on the surface, especially compared to Sapphire sperging all over the place. But on the inside Ruby's just a total wreck, in a way worse position than Sapphire is, and sometimes everything he's bottled up just explodes and ruins everything.

A big theme of RS (besides heterosexuality) was to not judge a book by its cover. Sapphire turning out to be the nicer more stable character and Ruby being the mentally ill troublemaker is a twist, since appearance wise you'd expect them to be the total opposite. Sapphire looks crazier but Ruby is the actual insane one.

So westerners blindly trying to strip Sapphire of her emotional personality means erasing all of the lore above. As usual.
