This seems innacurate as their heads should relatively be the same size for a true comparison. I think poppy's bonnet is throwing it off.

My theory is that she's an "homage", for the lack of a better term, to old-school lolis from the late 70s and early 80s like Minky Momo, which was written by Takeshi Shudo, who also worked for the OS anime

We’ve had child and schoolchild trainers since the beginning of the series. It’s just that Poppy is a particularly egregious example of it (and she talks even worse than the others too). Also >>57987510

It also means that a 9-year old is good enough to be an Elite Four member, whereas the protagonist of a Pokemon game only ever starts out at the age of 10 or higher.
Poppy is canonically more of a prodigy than (You)
Dawn the video game character is mentioned to be 12 in the leaked documentation. In general your character is supposed to be right around middle school/junior high age with mostly cool older kids (high schoolers) as gym leaders before encountering older trainers who made a living off of Pokemon battles (though by this point the adults have all been given secondary jobs.)

well maybe if my parents had given me a steel type starter at the age of 3 instead of sending me to Lt. Surge Elementary during my peak pokemon training years i also could have been a generational prodigy

They just needed a bait to get adult Pokemon fans to buy the game since they know most of them are sexually attracted to the underaged characters of the franchise. A cheap but simple marketing tactic

Also, they could have done that with the protagonists. Toddler lolis are too far for most lolicons, so it just doesn't make sense.
People like Dawn, Iris, Lillie, Marnie, Misty, etc. because they grew up with them. For most people Poppy would look too young by the time they're playing the franchise

break suspension of disbelief
alternatively talking like that is haha funny for a 9 year old in Japan and not just weird, so it might’ve been a poor carryover

I know the protagonists are always kids and beat legendaries and we've had characters like Iris as a champion, but I could always kind of keep the suspension of disbelief intact. I feel like this character takes it too far and kind of trivializes raising and battling pokemon as a whole. I guess what I'm saying is she's shit and I hate this stupid toddler.
god, imagine dawn visiting paldea, challenging poppy, and just fucking mopping the floor with her. then bullying her relentlessly after she wins. the academy can't do shit, dawn's not a student

Canon isn't real, its a vain attempt for autists to attempt to handle the lack of concrete logic in works of fiction. Its true for Biblical canon and its true for Pokemon.
