Are tera types a good mechanic?

Tera Type is a stat individual Pokémon have that determines which type it'll shift to when Terastallized. It can be changed by going to a restaurant and feeding 50 Tera Shards of the same type to your Pokémon.
There's also a hidden second Tera Type stat which is used for compatibility and hack checking in HOME.

Playing any meta where tera is banned immediately puts in contrast just how nice it is to not have Tera.

it's great but giving STAB boosts to your pre-tera type moves is a bit overkill

terastalization: looks incredibly retarded, also is trash and pointless in a playthrough. but is a genius massive addition to competitive pokemon.

mega evolution: looks sick as fuck, is busted but criminally poorly utillised in the playhtrough experience. was just bad for competitive pokemon due to it not being balanced at all

The only negative is that if you catch a pokemon there's a 95% chance it's tera type is just it's first typing, and that's pretty much because they needed a reason to do tera raids and gathering tera crystals. I can see the reverse where the tera type being random could suck ass, but catching a fire type and knowing it's tera type is going to be fire is just incredibly boring.

But just like mega stones mostly being post game, or z-crystals being spread throughout the game, or even pokemon not having the ability to gigantamax because once again they wanted you to do raids... none of that is about the mechanic itself.

Don't care how good tera is mechanically, it's lame as fuck. I want to make my pokemon go super saiyan, not this sparkly giant crown garbage.

Of course they are not. You are either running a Steel tera type or a counter to Steel. Also the big crystal hats look stupid.

Steel is the best one because you want to take an axe to your head when using Terastal.

Pretty much this. From a casual, single player standpoint Megas were cool and I look forward to their return in PLZA. I'm dreading having to teambuild around them again in competitive.

Tera was intentionally lame because CHARIZARD was supposed to get a special snowflake super saiyan version that would look much cooler in comparison. But game freak was so shit at coding that they couldn’t get it to work

Imagine dick sucking Game Freak this much.
Tera is shit and only serves to give players easy access to their instant win one turn set-up. It's an incredibly hacky reversal that destroys type balancing.

If you’re a comp autist? Yes. If you’re a normalfag, no. The only gimmick normalfags care about is megas.

Maybe tera was good in competitive but I don't know what they were thinking with making it so pokemon are always caught with one of their types as the tera type, it is prohibitively expensive to change, and your only real way to interact with the region's gimmick during the campaign is by catching a raid pokemon
Anonymous No.57996925 >>57996928

The type changing is fine, keeping your STAB on top of giving you STAB for a new type is overkill.

Terra is cool but I wish there was a better way to show it off. The big dumb hats suck.
Why not just change their color scheme?
Anonymous No.57997032
>>57996958
>Why not just change their color scheme?
They've been wanting to do the type change gimmick as far back as gen 3, as seen with the Delta Species cards. They most definitely felt like a recolor or colored aura wasn't obvious enough for people to be able to tell right away what type they've switched to. It only worked on cards because they could change the whole card color to the new type, not having to worry about the art as much. So this is why Tera ended up so big, flashy, and obvious.
