Though $433M from $150m is still a success. However, minecraft's spent 10 years brainwashing kids and teens, sonic's core series is dead in the water and mariodrones played the same basic "bowser kidnaps female" game forever so a movie based on that was gonna do well for that crowd. And of course, Pokémon earned 94B yen lifetime from the anime movies, so maybe the west just doesn't care for Not!Pokémon Pokémon movies.

Justice Smith's performance was godawful and the plot was terrible, that's why. Ryan Reynolds was quite honestly the best thing in the film, and I'm not even much of a fan of his.

I'd say it's a mix of the realistic live-action style for the Pokémon and being based on a spinoff than any core series entry unlike the other three. Had it been an adaptation of Red and Blue, we'd probably have seen it go the Sonic route with a Gold and Silver movie and might be looking forward to Ruby and Sapphire's.
There's still Pokémon x Aardman to look forward to in 2027, but I have a feeling that it's going to be its own thing than an adaptation.

Torterra are like continents. They're a world turtle. Yes, the general design is just a garden on the back of a tortoise, but the giant Torterra are like a maximal expression of Torterra's basic concept, aside from the lore immediately beforehand that they were experimented on and are not naturally that size.

You could not possible be more wrong. That was like the one perfect visual gag the movie did.

>Ugly as sin pokemon models
Eh, 50/50. Like you really don't understand that the only thing preventing a LOT of pokemon from being gross and horrifying is SPECIFICALLY because they're cartoons with flat, textureless colors that you don't perceive the same way as you would an actual living creature with roughly the same anatomy.
So yes, some of them were ugly, but so what? The cartoon monster, if it were real, would be far less cute.

On the other hand, some of the anatomy irritated me. Pikachu's ears, if you were being realistic, would be a cone like structure where you could see it funneling towards an ear canal. As a cartoon, I don't care. It's about the silhouette like Mickey Mouse. But they copped out and took the lazy path and made "Realistic" Pikachu's ears just furry antennae instead of actual ears.

>Based on a shitty spinoff that nobody played.
Yeah. But it has a better script-writing premise so I'm not entirely surprised that's what they did. I'm pretty sure they lost some interest because Detective Pikachu was pretty niche and unpopular.

People keep talking about how basing it on Detective Pikachu was a shit idea but it kind of is the best they could have done.
The games themselves provide you with essentially zero compelling characters and the anime isn't faring much better, so you'd essentially be relying on the Pokemon to carry the film.
Problem is Pokemon don't talk, so you can't have a Pokemon character.
Detective Pikachu really was their best shot because it let them have Pikachu as a main character without raising any eyebrows.
Maybe PMD could have worked but without the live action humans aspect it'd be a lot harder to justify the movie's existence in comparison to the plethora of animated Pokemon films that exist already.
As for why Detective Pikachu didn't spawn a franchise? Well the movie ends pretty conclusively, I doubt many people wanna watch a sequel with a human Ryan Reynolds as the main character.

A movie that attempt to grab the sense of adventure and charm of games/anime. Pokemon's strongest (albeit underutilized nowadays) point always was world building and Detective Pikachu just threw it all out of the window for a random black dude, Pikachu that can do jack shit and DUDE CITY WHERE POKEMON BATTLES ARE BANNED LMAO.

Detective Pikachu as a whole thing sucks, it's premise is just miserable contradiction to Pokemon.

Because nobody gives a fuck about "Detective" Pikachu and generic teenager #4,132. If they had just made a Pokemon movie that followed a trainer in the Pokemon world go on a traditional journey, that would have gone down a lot better methinks.

Because instead of being a live action retelling of Ash's journey or at least Gen 1, it was about a spinoff that hardly anyone cared about.
Problem is, I Choose You and Origins both already existed to fulfill fairly recent treads of Ash's journey and Gen 1, so those options would both be seen as redundancies.
They should've saved a live action foray for Pokemon's 30th anniversary instead, then they'd be in the clear to strike one of the two, likely Ash's journey since he's now out of the anime's picture.

Anon, Disney would have to buy Pokémon for that to happen (not happening, they're not buying 4 unrelated companies JUST to get the rights to piggerchu, even Disney execs ain't that fucking retarded) and WB and the franchise had a relationship that existed before Illumination even became a thing, so it was unlikely TPC would break that partnership (that's not how Japanese companies operate - cf the distributor for Nintendo in the nordic countries still being an independent outfit due to the founder establishing a relationship with Nintendo head office directly in the 80's, meaning they left his territories alone when they established Nintebnddo EU and UK to handle the rest of Europe's distribution).
There's more factors in play than just wishing your favourite calarts krews made a pogeymans films, but the world is an altogether complicated, complex beast of regents, rulers, rights, remits and relationships for it to become reality. If it were up to me, I'd have gone to Ghibli and threw money at them until they agreed to make a full-length pokémon animated movie in their style, but I'm a shithead gaijin who knows little of how actually feasible such a plan would be to contract Ghibli to make one.

Bitch, we know EXACTLY how fucking popular the thing is with kids, because adults didn't buy the GBA in any sort of large number and the DS, while popular as all fuck with the general public, Pokémon again seemed to only hit a certain number of players (indeed the average of both new Gen games on the system equalled roughly Gen 3's performance in totality). Thje 3DS was another adult-repellant system, leading Pokémon to once again enshrine itself as the premier kid-popular game series on the system (we all know the same people you're bitching about buying merch and cards are the same who buy mario kart and new SMB2). And once again averaged out to th same totals roughly as Gen 3 and Gen 4/5''s average. Series saw a 10m bump from the potato handheld days, true. But the presence of the Switch Lite and the performance of LGPE prior to SS indicate few kids were getting the systems prior to Gen 8's lauch just after the Lite model released. Series is still popular as fuck with children, you're just in an internet bubble (due to also being a manchild fuck interested in collectorfagging cards for future "profit").

i don't think detective pikachu was a bad choice to adapt into a pokemon movie, but i think the pokemon themselves weren't very appealing. they looked too gritty and realistic and i think for something as cartoony as pokemon it just doesn't really work. you need a bit of a bouncier colourful aesthetic to make it more marketable. i also think the environment was a bit too gritty and kinda dull
