Most people who complain about modern Pokemon are people who grew up watching the anime and it hijacked their brains so they don’t see the games as games but as “gateways to another world” and when it doesn’t live up to their imagination, they go into despair.

Yeah this is literally how the intros of Gens 1->6 frame the world.
I can't say anything about 8 and 9, but 7 just puts you in the shoes of someone who's already there, without the whole spiel.
