You have it backwards. 9-year old kids cannot make decisions like that, it's the parent's job to make them.

She made her own decision instead of allowing the doctor to make it for her. Had he been right and the MRI scan showed no tumors, she would still have been better off than waiting 6 months without knowing the cause.
