Outside of the fandom, Misty is the "Default" Pokemon girl. If I look up Pokemon cosplays on Instagram, facebook, or any other social media site, Misty is the first result and sometimes the only result. She's basically "The" Pokemon girl everywhere else.

But not in the fandom.

But here she isn't common. She isn't popular.
My elder millenial friends thought she was Ash's girlfriend. One of them started making fun of me when I said that isn't true at all. But here everyone knows that the shipping isn't real. She should have scored Red in the manga though.

Her fame is very closely tied to the anime which she stopped being part of the main cast after gen 2. So the only people that like her are the people that grew up during the OS period of the anime which by this point are outnumbered in the fanbase by younger fans who have no reason to care about her because she's barely in the games and her cameos are too small post Johto to be noteworthy to newer fans. In a world where Team Rocket were written out of Advanced instead of Misty she might've at least retained some popularity with the GBA kids

OS was still airing regularly even as far as Battle Frontier. Kids back then were definitely familiar with Misty.

It's an almost 30 year old series that's still getting new content, and as the series gets older, new new fans who never grew up with the original generations start to pop up, so they are obviously gonna prefer the newer gens compared to the old ones since that is what they grew up with. I'm now starting to see more people say that gen 5 was their introduction to the series. The older fans are pretty much all in their early to mid-30s now. Seriously I'm starting to see a lack of love for the gen 1 girls, even for the top dogs like Misty. When a newer fan tries out the older games, they're not gonna have that same attachment that the 30yo boomers had due to their more archaic nature and lack of modern QOL features, meaning they won't enjoy them as a result. As new generations get new pokemon that outperform the older ones in the meta, the old ones will get left behind in the dust, meaning newer fans are gonna prefer the newer mons, leaving the old ones forgotten relics of the past, only beloved by 30yo boomers or older.

Most franchises with a clear real world favorite have much more diverse opinions on which one is best among their respective internet superfans, Misty is just an extreme example because most normies know very few or no other pokegirl beyond her and Jessie.

I think the gen 2/4 design does help because it at least attracts some people to Misty that prefer that design over her gen 1/anime one. Problem is that it's more niche since it only appears in post games, never appeared in the anime and any promotional material using Misty is using her anime or gen 1 design. I don't think there is any official art of Misty's HGSS design outside of the done by Sugimori for the game.

Exactly. Gen 1's POKEMON- and by that we really mean Pikachu, the Starters, and the five legends- are many of the enduring faces of the franchise, not the people. Misty left the show in what, 2002, she's an echo of an echo. You'd have to already be interested enough in Pokemon through some other channel to seek out the first TV series at this point.

I remember my parents thought Pikachu was named Pokemon for mostly the same reason, their exposure to the franchise largely consisted of images that had Pikachu and the Pokemon logo in them.

Same. I think it's cultural exposure. We see girls in bikinis all the time because its default sexy outfit in media. Meanwhile we see one piece (GAIGO GAIGO) suits less often, thus making them a more unique visual that sticks out more.

Alternatively, if you're a legs/hips guy it maximizes attention to what your brain considers sexy. Leotards drive me fucking nuts.
