Yanmega always sorta just gave off the vibe that it should've been part of a line that needed to be resurrected from a fossil. It feels like one of those Pokemon from a long forgotten time, imo.

My favorite gen 4 mon.

That's the point, it literally evolves by learning ancieny power.

I wish there were more Ancient Power evolutions, but I imagine Game Freak got all their inspiration for such concepts out through the paradox mons.

Nah, the two are pretty different really. AP evolutions are the idea that a power can evolve backward to its most primordeal form, usually being bigger and more aggressive due to the competition. Paradox mons are just random pokemon with seemingly random aspects altered, they only share a loose "prehistoric" theme, from an alternate dimension. There's a lot of lines you could give a neat AP evolution to.

Is there an actual fun and creative set you can use yanmega for or is the only/best option really to just use throat spray/bug buzz/air slash and just try to sweep with him? I love the pokemon but that is just not an interesting or flexible set and there's no tricks or skill expression, very boring.

It's based on the Meganeura, from the Carboniferous period. There was more oxygen in the air back then, so insects could get bigger.
But they have an inefficient breathing system, which is why they are so small nowadays.

Yanma, Tangela and Piloswine all evolve by learning Ancient Power. They're basically honorary primal reversions.

No the flying type is a huge part of Yanmega's identity. It makes loud buzzing when it flies, it picks up speed with speed boost and it uses stab air slash. The only argument in favor of Yanmega being dragon is pun that doesn't work in Japanese

Doesn't the word for dragonfly in japanese translate literally to something like "big fly"?
Dragons have nothing to do with dragonflies in japanese. So why the fuck would they do it?

... well, depending on where you live, anyway... but yes, the age of giant insects was indeed a thing, and I'm honestly not sure if that or the age of dinosaurs would've been the scariest time to be alive... I think I almost prefer taking my chances with the dinos, lol

Why do people like you care? Pokemon has a massive global playerbase. They can throw a bone to global players once in a while and make it Dragon type.
People want it for the first bug/dragon type and Yanmega's design itself looks pretty badass enough to be a dragon.
