I lost interest at the start of gen5 because I got sick of the "Ash is still 10" shtick. So I'm probably the wrong person to reply. But from the limited exposure I had to the nu stuff...
I remember at my parent's house - someone had a birthday and we were hanging out - dad flicked over channels and came across an episode of the Alola anime. We kinda agreed to let it run for good time's sake.
I remember the pacing being absolutely ass and a whole lot of nothing happening during the entire time it was on. I remember being genuinely baffled at that. Someone else also commented something along the lines of "this is still going on?" "this" being "nothing". it was mostly running in the back, we weren't actively paying attention. every time I tried to, either Team Rocket or Ash's side of people was just talking about whatever. We switched channels at some point because it got boring seeing the same shit seemingly repeating forever.
The other time was an episode of Journeys, I think? That was fairly recent. I tried watching it because of the green-haired hypno boy and Friede was also there. Neat!
Couldn't force myself to care. Dipped while these 2 were still exchanging words. I guess to be fair, that episode seemed like some sort of intense climax or working up to one, meanwhile I know 0 lore about any of those characters. Hard to get invested like this for me, good looking anime men be damned.
I guess I liked the Arceus Special episodes... Because my husband-son was featured, kek. Kinda biased there. Didn't care about Goh.
So, "how much better", I mean... I'm not a fan. Admittedly, maybe I'd be more interested if I were the actual targeted audience kek. Orrr if the MAIN main protagonists weren't kids. Or, at the very least, if any of those damn kids appealed to me visually. Nu Pokemon character designs tend to be more miss than hit for me. I can't bring myself to care about any of their struggles or ambitions or whatever.
It's not for me, I think. YMMV.
