Depends on my mood, but I always like a good status/support build. Aromatherapy, dual screens, you've got options, even more so with breeding. Hell, even PoisonPowder is surprisingly valuable in HGSS, since you can only get TM06 by trading it from DPPT (one of the only genuine flaws with HGSS if you ask me). I never really use Synthesis though, it's not all that helpful in the campaign where I can just use items. But sometimes I use it for flavor here and there.
Also, getting the Earthquake TM towards the end of the Johto half of the game is always super exciting for offensive builds.
Meganium is a lot more versatile than people give it credit for. Most of the people who say it's the worst starter have never actually used it. It's true that it has a significant type disadvantage against a lot of the gyms and rocket grunts, yes, but in practice that never really seems to cause problems. I find that usually Chikorita/Bayleef/Meganium is tanky enough to take a couple supereffective hits, especially with screens up, which you get incredibly early. Hell, the one battle you could reasonably struggle with (Whitney) gets absolutely raped by an appropriately leveled Bayleef, because it resists Rollout.
