So for the first 25ish or so episodes the collages didn't have that many screenshots (starting from episode 33 onward, I started doing the bigger collages). This is especially the case for the first 5 episodes. So before I resume to episode 79 (and Movie 07 soon), I'll make up for the first episodes that didn't get enough content.

Our girl starts her journey as someone who's not that interested in Pokemon. She doesn't have any goals with them. The only reason why she's getting her pokemon starter kit from the region's professor (and thus, starting her Pokemon journey) is because she wants to travel the region (which, considering her traits from future episodes, probably translates to eating delicious food from different towns, visiting fun places, etc. Basically, the equivalent of doing an exchange program for the sake of tourism). A very uninspiring tale, and one that, when compared to Ash's during the first episode, acts as a foil.

I know a lot of Advanceshippers take advantage of picrel, but looking back at the full scene's context, having come after May was impressed that Ash took care of Pikachu "all through the night" and resolved that she didn't actually care about her bike that much (which is quite a contrast to the beta material), she basically guilted Ash into letting her join him (having feigned that she was going to be yet another bike girl he was indebted to). It seems the reasons she was so happy about getting him to agree were (1) she'd be able to bum off him and have a boy with existing traveling experience to take care of her (because if he'll pull an all-nighter to care for his Pikachu, that's a good sign of a caretaker overall), at least in the sense of having someone to do hard stuff for her and make her own traveling more comfortable, not actually because of any romantic feelings (although her placing her arms behind her head and basically flashing her boobs for him could've been very intentional, at least subconsciously, to "sweeten the deal," if you will); (2) since she was more familiar with the route back to Petalburg, she'd be able to, at least temporarily, place herself into the "expert" position, for her own ego by making this more experienced traveling impressed at her own utility, and overall fish for praise from him; and (3) she genuinely preferred to travel with a companion, rather than alone, once the option became available to her, and that the specifics of Ash himself were less important.

Basically, May was shown to be pretty manipulative in that scene. I mean, she not only guilted Ash, she actually guilted Pikachu too, and framed their way of apologizing to her that they let her join them. Once she felt she'd made the opening, she then pretty much invited herself, what with, "Don't worry! No need to decline! Let's go!"

I think I realize why Mistyfags were so mad about May in the early AG days. Only 2 episodes in and May's getting playfully physical with Ash, we have a shot (first column, third image down) where they almost look like they're holding hands, only for May to actually grab his wrist/hand moments later, and then take him to a dinner date for just the two of them. Couple that with the number of shots where they are just physically REALLY close together, and May blushing in that last screencap (ignoring the actual reason for the blushing), and I can understand a Mistyfag who just saw their girl leave the show weeks before getting pissed that this new girl not only seems to have already befriended Ash, without being a tsundere about it, but also, at least superficially, looks like she's making moves on him. This is all setting aside the obvious breast envy that also contributed to them getting mad about May.

That reminds me that Shudo pushed for Misty leaving instead of TR because she was written by guys who'd only ever see her as the token girl, and he wanted the next girl to not be like that. AG had a female writer on board. I think a lot of May's characterisation is down to them intentionally not wanting to repeat the mistakes of post-Togepi Misty's characterisation. Shudo also came up with the initial premise for AG but he went on sick leave in '01, so that's why AG has no series constructor credit as respect for him.

A lot of AG's first year is really trying to be the anti-Johto or look more grown up than that series did.

I kinda did some personal research since apparently Pokemon going digital was such a internal scandal with the animators, plus I love the look of the AG movies. The original tv airings for AG001-AG104 in Japan had a grain filter slapped on to trick viewers into thinking it was cels. Some promo art for AG and the Jirachi movie early on in 2003 also were hand painted. For Lucario and Manaphy, you can tell if a scene was cel made based on the backgrounds or if the eyes are really detailed. The scenes with flat tones on the eyes are the cel ones.

Ruby tricking Sapphire with harmless pranks is a funny thing that some better written fan doujins do. While it's probably meant to show how cunning he is without any real baggage, it's also just not hard to trick Sapphire to begin with, since she's a lethal mix of naive and impulsive (which equals being childlike at best or retarded at worst)

Honestly, the real twist in canon was how Sapphire never gets manipulated by someone truly evil, when all the opportunities were there for it to happen. The fact she only gets manipulated by someone who doesn't actually want to hurt her and ultimately has her best interests in mind (Ruby) is either a huge stroke of luck, or just another point to how much Ruby protects her, protecting her from other manipulative types like himself but worse. And Pokespe isn't actually edgy enough to have a Sapphire corruption arc.

In fact, canon never seriously forces Sapphire to outgrow her naivety and become too jaded/discerning, as if it wants her to stay stupid (at the end of ORAS, she's still running around on fours but in high heels this time, absolutely mental). I think because her innocence is what connects her to the spiritual/nature world, which is a big theme for her. If Sapphire was the only Hoenn protagonist, she'd likely be forced to become a fully independent wild girl outgrowing her retarded childishess, maybe become a lot more stoic, similar to what happened to Yellow (sole protag of her story arc, who also started out very naive to the world but eventually had to face its reality, to stop crying, and in the end fought the villain by herself).

But the fact the Hoenn arcs have 2 main protagonists even if the plot forgets this half the time means Sapphire can actually stay undeveloped in some ways. Where the narrative wanted Yellow to learn to stop crying, Sapphire had to learn to START crying, to not suppress her feelings anymore. Of course her now unrestrained emotions will make her look extra retarded, but she can stay retarded because she's not alone: Ruby will guard her innocence and cover that weak spot for her. (If you read RS closely, he actually has more angst about accidentally tarnishing Sapphire's innocence than protecting her physically. So he clearly knows she's stupid, but he sees it as purity to be preserved, not something to be "fixed".) The opposite is also true where Ruby never actually stops being selfish, and will probably never outgrow it fully. It's just that after RS and a lot of mindbreak, he expanded his definition of "himself" to include Sapphire. Meaning he now prioritizes her as much as he used to prioritize only himself, maybe more. So Sapphire tempers his shit personality.

So the 2 Hoenn protagonists can both stay flawed, because they're not travelling alone anyway, they're going together.

She's always freaked out over minor things even when Ruby wasn't involved, like the time she had a retarded fit in front of Wattson over literally nothing. She's just reactive like that, though she becomes less high strung after RS since she's no longer a dumbass 10 year old. But on the part of self consciousness, her having some moments of doubt (like when she got all fired up to confront Ruby about the truth, only to short circuit when actually trying to do it because she got embarrassed) is part of what makes her seem more human, instead of just being a meme Tarzan character.

I also think she stops acting tough after RS, as in her personality itself can be quite aggressive without wearing a fake bravado on top of it. Once she drops her main insecurities, she no longer has to play up the aggression/masculinity when it's not even necessary, so now she can be more emotionally vulnerable with other people.

Ruby's whole existence is just plausible deniability, whether he's actually being oblivious or faking it at any point in time is usually unclear. Did he actually forget his contacts or is he a pervert trying to grab some? Who knows, it's supposed to be vague especially out of context. Though the ORAS arc actually reveals enough about Ruby to make him less mysterious and more predictable. For example, after the RS/E arcs it's confusing whether Ruby likes Sapphire romantically or not, especially if you don't know what emotional avoidance/AvPD is, and some readers unironically believed his bullshit about having amnesia (when he was faking it so badly that even Sapphire smelled BS). After ORAS though, basically every question about his motivations are cleared up if you look hard enough. When you remove the contests, Ruby's whole schtick often boils down to "yes we get it you really fucking love your girlfriend" which is where all the obsessed simp Ruby/straightest Pokedex Holder Ruby memes came from.

Another tangent, but if Ruby ever shows up again after spilling all his spaghetti in ORAS, it'll be hard to recreate the same air of obscurity around him which he had in RS/E/ORAS (especially if he's protagonist again) which Kusaka always used as a huge crutch to make Ruby look cool. Though by this point a lot of readers would hate Ruby less if he was just more honest and transparent, even if only with Sapphire and nobody else.

I don't know any Korean so I unfortunately can't do much better than this, but one tip I'd give for using machine translation with no knowledge of the language is to give the text to an LLM and ask to provide a translation and analysis (the latter helps if you know a bit of the language, clears up subtext/implications, might help get more exact results). In my experience, ChatGPT and co. are generally better than Google Translate already, if only because, as was mentioned, you can add specific context or, if necessary, have it break the translated text down into an "interlinear" and start parsing the individual words, things that basic machine translators don't offer. DeepL is close in that it will give you alternate translation options for individual words, but that still requires some knowledge to choose the best options.
