Yeah, it's objectively terrible. But it remains my personal favorite anyway because I love birds, team rocket at least have a few clever lines, lugia's song is beautiful, the animation itself is very nice in some scenes, and I do like the villain's flying fortress.
Also the ancient mew card being identical to the one given out in theaters for the first movie felt like it had a very significant weight to it when this came out too. I remember thinking I had something even rarer than I originally thought sitting in my binder at home and that was really cool, while also getting the unsettling feeling that comes with realizing for the first time that maybe the line between good and evil is a lot thinner than we like to think. If the evil guy was just collecting and I'M just collecting then what does that make me? I had the same card, I caught those same birds our heroes where upset at him for catching in my copy of blue, and I was looking forward to catching lugia in the new games all the same. Why is weakening a pokemon with another pokemon spitting fire at it or whipping it with vines or tentacles the norm while artificial fireballs or whips are portrayed as cruel, why is a pokeball different from a cage especially since some pokemon like Ash's pikachu don't like their balls? It was clearly just meant to be a cool easter egg, nothing that deep, but 9 year old me really felt like I was just grasping something profound.

Thinking back on it, she might be the reason I like redheads.
