Did this guy actually do anything wrong? He was just catching Pokemon at the highest level. Got to catch them all?

Apparently catching Pokemon into giant mechanical spheres is a crime while catching them into small mechanical spheres is recommended by the whole world.

...Why didn't he just use Pokeballs anyway, nobody could say anything then.

His giant mechanical rings are essentially torture devices, while Pokeballs don't harm the Pokemon they're caught in.

Because he couldn't get a hold of Master Balls and catching them with non-Master Balls would have been too much of a pain, I guess?

He didn't get arrested at the end of the film, so I guess not.

Note how Ash never told him how he was wrong

>pokeballs dont have any effect on the pokemon inside them
>they struggle to get out when you throw a ball unless they are born into captivity
>some pokemon (like pikachu) refuse to stay inside of one
>they sell more expensive luxury balls that canonically make pokemon happier that you put them in one and not a cheaper ball
Yeah I'm thinking they are probably not that comfortable inside

The lore surrounding important guardian-type legendaries hadn't yet been thoroughly established, and because he was specifically seeking birds revered as local deities responsible for keeping the balance in check rather than literally any other iteration of these Pokemon, it was seen as a bad thing.
If this guy happened post-SM, no one would even care as long as he's not abusing or forcibly containing them, because guardian legendaries always find their way back to their natural role when they're needed most.

Confirmed for not watching the damn movie

(You) can literally capture the Tapus in SM, local deities that are seen as a major reason Alola can exist as harmoniously as it does, and no one will give you shit for it. In fact they'll clap and cheer because it shows how badass you are, because they know that if they're ever needed again, they'll return to their native islands, even if you were to throw them all across spacetime via trading, Bank and HOME.

How many times does it need to be explained?

Catching a Pokémon with a Poké Ball the normal does not capture them in the literal sense. When we "capture" a Pokémon in a Poké Ball the normal way, it's the Pokémon agreeing to stay and join. And Pokémon can leave their ball whenever they want. So yes, the guy from OP's image is totally doing something bad whereas using a Poké Ball the normal way is not, it's not a contradiction. If anything, an example like that guy should make that even more obvious.

Because he wasn't a pokemon trainer, but a rich 'collector' who just wanted to have them because he is rich and thus felt entitled to anything he wants. He was a shit head in several ways.

They say this in a lorebook in Gen 5 but it's not supported by the rest of the franchise at all, as recently as Journeys they had an episode where Team Rocket was able to forcibly recall Grookey to a pokeball without its consent.

What? It's always worked like that. Misty's Psyduck used to leave its ball as often as it wanted, to Misty's exasperation, and she'd recall it immediately after. Jessie's Wobbuffet too, though Jessie tended to eventually stop recalling him back and let him hang with the others.

Yeah? but he captured the birds in some electric cages, not POKEBALLS. dumbass.

Sure a Pokémon can be sent back to their ball by the ball being manually activated, but they can still leave it when their inside whenever they want. There's plenty of instances in the anime of Pokémon leaving their ball on their own. So you can send them back to the ball, but they could just leave it again. Also that specific case with that Grookey was with a Team Rocket Ball, it could totally have differences to regular Poké Balls anyway.

Also Dawn's Pachirisu could dodge the ball's recall beam.

Pokeballs aren’t prisons you tard they’re just a neitral space that calms down wild Pokemon.
Pokemon can leave Pokeballs whenever they want. I don’t know how many times Jessie’s Wobbufett has to pop out on its own to get that across to you fags.
We also see examples like Misty’s Gyarados resisting the withdraw mechanism. The Pokeball is consensual.
So when a douchebag catches Pokemon in electric torture spheres that can’t be escaped it is indeed worse. It’s the main difference between a trainer and a poacher.

Ash’s Pikachu is actually considered to be an anomaly for not liking the Pokeball. Most Pokemon find it comfortable.
The luxury ball is probably just the difference between a regular comfy couch and one of those red and gold hyper expensive ones that rich nepo babies like to waste their daddy’s money on

I think they are comfy, but some pokemon do not want comfy captivity and would rather have a "harder" life in the wild.
