it's not a high bar. B/W's story is just generic Saturday morning cartoon bullshit that wouldn't get any attention in any other franchise. it's just considered the peak of Pokemon storytelling because it's one of the only times they even attempted telling a coherent story (that wasn't also overly obnoxious like S/M). but yeah, it's mediocre. I'm honestly of the opinion that the less story a Pokemon game has, the better. it should be minimalist and emphasize the player character's adventure over anything else. obviously it's hard to say sincerely that RBY or GSC have the *best* stories, because they are very barebones. but I think their stories have the best roles within their respective games.

How does anyone consider gen 3 story good when the initial rival just ups and quits before the 7th gym and the other rival has barely any interactions before his proper fight at Victory Road? Also both evil teams are among the most retarded ones in the series.

I agree. Scarlet/Violet are objectively the best story if you discard everything else.
Although I would argue that if you take into account the backstory and MC's actions, Red/Blue win by far. The Cinnibar island/ditto/Mew/Mewtwo stuff is legendary and the series has never been able to reach that same peak, especially fueled by the frustratingly genius move to make Mew impossible to catch but actually in the game.

Compare that to every Team Flare member being the worst while Lysandre seemingly has no idea. Even the manga found this weird and made it out like Lysandre was just using them and planned to super make sure he killed them.

The Gen 5 story is bad, and no I don't mean that as in all the stories are bad, I mean Gen 5 is legitimately one of the worst plots.
There are elements that just exist and aren't used for anything like the Sages or the girls that raised N. Why are there Sages? Are they supposed to do something? They just say Ghetsis looked for like minded people.
The liberation idea is horribly explored and wasted.
Ghetsis is just le evil. No insight on his character, no explanation on why he wants Unova, no lore on if his bloodline used to rule Unova or anything justifying his actions, nothing on why the other Sages trusts him so deeply, absolutely nothing period.
It is a plot that tricks you into thinking something is being explored but it's just a string of nothingburgers. It was a story Masuda was so weirdly excited to tell yet there's no effort in it at all. Gen 5 is sandwiched between two gens with stories that are much more shat on but Masuda unironically had put more effort into their lore. Gen 4 has more lore books, some insight on Cyrus's past, even tells you about Galactic's daily operations as an R&D company in Veilstone. In Gen 6 you can see how money obsessed Kalos is, an NPC talks a little on how Lysandre got so jaded, and of course there's AZ's story and the payoff at the end. What is there in BW?

The theme of political propaganda and isolation is explored, just think of the way N relates to the outside world. It remains a Pokémon game, but the story is worthy for what it is.

It hardly even does that well because the propaganda is just Ghetsis giving some speeches while his grunts all try their best to be as cartoonishly evil as possible. Even Team Flare manages to be better in this regard because Malva was a member of the Elite 4 and the news. A few civilians in BW just release pokemon and that's it, nothing with actual substance like civilians protesting gym leaders or the pokemon lab.

Unironically, I think that Gen 3 has the best storytelling out of all gens. It doesn't have the best conventional story, but thematicallly it's extremely on point, as everything in the game ties back into its core theme (that of nature, and humans interacting with it). People criticize that the evil teams don't take themselves too seriously, but that's what I like about it - it isn't trying to be overtly serious, and it doesn't need to be to convey its themes properly. It can be just fun and kooky, and I really enjoy it for that.

I liked Sun/Moon, I don't remember the story exactly, but the worldbuilding was great, besides HGSS, it was the only Pokemon game I've played where I felt like all the NPCs and Gym Leaders weren't completely wooden and had something to say, and the legendary was much better done than Sc/Violet. I do remember it being a bit dumbed down but yeah, Sun/Moon.
