BW was a pseudo-reboot so Iris having a caustic and cocky personality with Ash paralleled Misty's own. Likewise Cilan is the region's first Gym Leader who becomes the team chef, and Ash meets a legendary upon starting his journey (Zekrom for Unova, Ho-Oh for Kanto).

With the position of female party member fulfilled, Hilda wasn't needed.

If you want to count Akari appearing as well because Dawn dressed up in Hisuian clothes at the start of the arc then I guess you could. Have people really not noticed by now? It wasn't because of any of those dumb reasons, it's because the only female companions Ash had are those that exist in the game even if you don't choose them. May is your rival if you choose Brendan, and Dawn if you choose Lucas, but Hilda is nowhere to be seen except the Battle Subway if you choose Hilbert. Serena still exists if you choose Calem, so that's why she was in XY, but Selene doesn't exist if you choose Elio. Same with Gloria and Victor and Juliana and Florian.

To be fair. The anime depictions of Misty, Brock, May, Dawn and Serena are either as popular or more popular than their game counterpart and for a lot are the version of the character they first think of. That can't really be said for the special characters aside from maybe Green.

Iris diverges from Misty quite a bit

She was never a Gym Leader (Drayden wanted her to become his apprentice and take over for her, but she rejected that path), and she's more of a playful tease than a tsundere.

She has her own identity as a character, whereas Cilan never goes beyond "Brock replacement"
