The decision to do that makes a statement that says "We've created a perfectly good design that accentuates Lickitung's weird Japanese monster charm, trashed it in favor of giving it a cute mascot appeal for the purpose of plushie baiting, and got another opportunity to fix this error only to double down and we did it with smiles on our faces. It's because it fully commits to being weird instead of including cute appeal, it's limbs (most notably legs) look like they can actually support its weight, and being perfectly round makes him look more like a monster instead of an obese cartoony humanoid. That drawing made me realize another deep-seated reason why I find Lickilicky to be a disappointing evolution in that it just doesn't fully commit to being cute or weird. It's supposed to be fully grown yet is designed to look like a baby and it's too human-like and upright to be a monster.

Lickilicky feels like a downgrade of Lickitung, not just as a design, but as a creature in general.

Sugimori is completely right in theory. If you go for straight "cool" you frequently get edgeslop. The problem is that they usually implement these drawbacks on designs that weren't even that cool to begin with, and the stuff they pick usually just makes the silhouette of the design completely unbalanced

The purple-tipped spikes and tail are a bit unnecessary but it's still better than what we got and the horn is a nice touch. But yeah, an ancient evolution could work because the very fact the line has such strange markings on its body could be further explored.

Lickilicky isn't goofy enough, Lickitung has a longer tongue and bigger tail ffs. It looks more like a gen 4 redesign rather than an evolution
