Yeah exactly. The previous games were more like a theme park ride you just breeze through with a bunch of friendly but usually uninteresting people that the game pretends are your friends but it doesn't feel like they earned that. They kinda just happen to be there to tag along for the ride.
In SV, it's really just a bunch of weirdo kids with their own issues whose paths happened to cross thanks to you. None of them really knew or liked each other particularly at the beginning, and somehow wind up in a situation that forces them to bond and grow up a little. They went through a traumatic event that only they really know about and no one else could possibly relate to. It even doesn't shy away from touching upon the subject of death head-on.

I know the game is full of flaws. I know it looks and runs like shit. But man, this shit was kino. I always wanted something like this, since gen fucking 1.

I would say Lillie's story was nice too but in my opinion the way ONLY Lillie mattered is what makes the huge difference. Hau barely matters despite having some sort of character arc and Gladio's role is basically being Lillie's rude bodyguard when you aren't there, SV feels like a proper implementation of BW and XY multiples friends thing with SM's "one of them is the key to the villain's story" part.
Fans seem very pleased with them specially in japan so I really hope GF learns from SV success and makes something similar for gen 10.

I think SV is kinda dogshit compared to the DS era titles but it's the most fun I've had with 3D Pokemon. I love the open world style of SV and the open zone style of PLA. It's so much better than the theme park style from the past few gens.

Yeah, to continue my theme park analogy, Lillie is the kid you have to encourage to go on the roller coaster, and then you don't even get to sit next to her. Very weird dynamic, even if it's a bit more interesting than most other rival/friend characters.

Another thing that makes SV feel like a proper story is that the MC actually talks with the characters they bond with. They're a character who interacts with people and has something of a personality. They aren't just a mute shell that can only smile and say YES or NO that somehow everyone loves. That also makes a huge difference in how genuine the friendships feel.

You’re barely a ‘bodyguard’. It’s the opening sequence with the bridge, the meadow (which she’s not really in danger just lost), rescuing her from Aether (with Gladion and Hau), and then escorting her to the altar for Nebby. Most of her story doesn’t even involve you. Characters like Kukui, Burnet, Hau, Olivia, Hapu, Acerola, & Wicke are helping her more than anything. The only time you’re a bodyguard is when she’s starting to gain her own strength but she obviously can’t scale the wilderness on her own especially that Nebby is inactive as Cosmoem. Most of your time in Alola is away from her. You’re more of a motivator.
