Com Mons
AKA "early dungeon crap." You ever use them?
Anonymous No.58098395
zubat line is pretty ok but i see it too often ingame as
geodude line is a bunch of uggos so no

Everytime I see Geodude I think about wanting to add it to my team before remembering how it evolves into something that looks so different

Early game dungeon is a very broad category so yeah

Worse part is you cant even get Golem while playing solo...

Yeah, and of the 4 trade evos of gen 1 Golem seems the least special for some reason. Fighting, Psychic, and Ghost were relatively rare types while rock is just rock.
Anonymous No.58098471
I’ve used several of the regional birds but I don’t think I’ve used any of the most common cave Pokemon. I feel like a lot of them are trade evos which I just can’t be bothered with.
I’ve also used Tentacool on a playthrough which is definitely a com mon even if not usually available until mid game.

>after all these years zubat line still has a unique typing
>despite its common typing, geodude is easily the best of the rock/grounds
i don't get it, shouldn't they be worse if they're so common?
Anonymous No.58098487 >>58099210
I've used Zubat in almost every single playthrough where it's been available. Can't escape it.

I'll be actively trying to use Pokemon I've never used before to keep things fresh. But then there's Zubat. Always reliable. Fighting and grass types fuck off.

Crobat has never been a burden. Zubat is the best bird.

I used Zubat in Gen 1 before and it's surprising good even in that game. It basically comes with all you'll need - Leech Life, Bite, Confuse Ray, Wing Attack. Haze can be a useful tech option, and you can always teach it Toxic as well. The typing defensively is sooo good in Gen 1.

Geodude is fucking great, I don't know how that can be controversial. Maybe Rhyhorn's a tiny bit better but you don't get him until basically late game.

Come to think, I might have given mine Mega Drain just so it could rape more Ground/Rock/Water types. Definitely more broadly useful than Leech Life.

Leech Life is super effective against Poison in Gen 1... Eh, it's a toss-up. Why not both?

Not even RB's fault. It was DPs. RB could actually go without filling every dungeon with Zubat, Machop, Geodude. Meanwhile, DP couldn't even keep them off of routes

Those are both good, though. I think a better set would be something like Ratata and Sentret.

Just finished AS with a Mightyena, Shroomish, Linoone (hm slave but still did some work) and a Probopass (Nosepass is kind of an early dungeon mon). Swampert and Skarmory rounded it out, so my latest catch was metal bird in the ashy route. Pretty much all early game mons.

Raticate is one of my go to Kanto mons because of nostalgia. Keep super fang and hyperfang on it.

Is it dogshit by the third gym? Yes
Will I pump all my stat boosters into it and keep trying to make focus energy pin missile work? Yes

Fixing Beedrill in Gen 1:
Have it learn Pin Missile at lvl 16, Focus Energy at 20, and Twin Needle at 30.
Make Focus Energy work.
Buff Twin Needle's damage and/or poison chance

Depends. Geodude is hilariously good in Johto and obtainable before the first gym so it tends to be a mainstay on those teams specifically, but I really dislike the line and avoid it in any other context. I’ve seen a lot of people express a love for Zubat’s line, but despite really loving bats I’ve never liked the damn thing and still don’t.

Much more fond of stuff like Tentacruel or Butterfree that, while still extremely common and arguably shitty mons, have a somewhat unique niche that makes up for their faults. Also nice designs, those are good.

>The typing defensively is sooo good in Gen 1.
…part poison on a mon with weak defenses? In the game where Psychic is the equivalent of a gun in a knife fight? Are you smoking something or do you know some 5D chess strat that I’m missing out on?

i tend to use the geodude line in games where i can actually get golem without trading (so fangames/romhacks) which is pretty decent
other ones that i've used to some degree beyond just earlygame filler (besides staraptor/talonflame which are obviously good mons)

I mean, how many trainers do you encounter using psychic moves, let alone wild pokemon? Not really that many. You'll be in more danger from Electric moves. But there are so many poison types you'll be fighting in Team Rocket, and Water types along routes. And Golbat has advantages against trainers like Erika, Koga, Giovanni, Koga, and Agatha.

>I mean, how many trainers do you encounter using psychic moves
an entire gym of 8 trainers in Fuschia, any bug catcher with a Butterfree, your main rival in any fight past Cerulean, I think a Starmie trainer in the sea routes near Seafoam Cave, Drowzee user near cycling road, I can’t remember if this guy was in Johto or not but I know there was a Mr Mime somewhere in the far west

As for wild Pokémon: Drowzee is surprisingly common, Jynx in the Seafoam islands, but otherwise I guess you’ve got me there

>advantages against trainers like
>Erika,
Fair enough since it has better speed than the wrapping fucks
>Koga
Don’t most of his trainers use night shade? Or was that FRLG
>Giovanni,
Basically every single trainer here uses rock/grounds primarily, what are you on about. Zubat’s alright against Giovanni’s Nidos and eats shit against everything else
>Koga,
why bring him up twice
>Agatha.
Only her Arbok has any attacks that Zubat can resist, its entire kit is pretty ineffective against her team

Team Rocket’s a fair point, but what relevance do water-types have? If anything, sending in a Zubat against those is very stupid given the sheer amount of water/ices in Kanto and the fact that the remaining water types are either Blastoise or Water/Psychic. That poor thing is going to be dead in seconds anywhere south of Vermilion unless you’re having it fight the Tangelas in Pallet

Mudkip and zubat is an unstoppable combo in RSE since mudkips evos only fear grass and the bats shit all over grass types, don't need to catch anything else for the entire game
I usually use taillow for that instead though for the guts-facade keks

Zubat's line learns Mega/Giga Drain via TM and while it's Special (Attack) is nothing to lose your mind about, it's still enough to fuck all Rock/Grounds due to their fragility on special side.

t. Dude that swept FRLG Gio with an underleveled Golbat.

Not in the early gens. It was much more of a toss-up, thanks to Explosion being so powerful. That only really applies to online battling though. Explosion is pretty useless in single player and Rhydon had higher attack and HP

Consider that a lot of psychic type lines have unique circumstances tied to them:

Alakazam is a trade evolution.
Mewtwo and Mew are legendaries.
Mr. Mime and Jynx are trade only.
Exeggutor is Safari Zone only.

This only leaves Starmie, Slowbro, and Hypno.

Meanwhile rock only has... Huh. I forgot that half of the rock type pokemon in gen 1 are fossils. So maybe Rock is a special type.
Anonymous No.58102347
>>58102150
Geodude is the only really common one. Onix is fairly rare encounter in the later tunnels, Rhyhorn is a Safari Zone exclusive (albeit a common one).

Given it's the sole resistance to Normal, which is by far the most common type of attacking move you encounter, it makes sense that they'd rank alongside Ghost as a special type.
Anonymous No.58102459
>>58102150
Starmie also evolves by stone. Only Slowbro and Hypno arguably evolve “normally.”
