Here's a question - we talked alot about humans being transformed into Pokemon in our world last thread, but how would humans who have transformed into Pokemon be treated in a Pokemon society that has late 20th century technology, as opposed to the more primitive classical or medieval level they seem to operate at in Mystery Dungeon? Would there be a strong central government tracking and formalizing the integration of these former humans, or are things more laissez faire than that? Is there formalized education or apprenticeships for them to pursue? Are explorer guilds still a thing? Does being in a place that is simultaneously familiar and alien (as Pokemon would build their cities to suit their needs, so expect more wild variance in architecture and even the sizes of buildings. Probably fewer cars because a lot of species don't need them) have a different psychological impact from a regular Mystery Dungeon experience, where just about everything is totally foreign? Been pondering what teched up Mystery Dungeon would look like lately, so I've been curious.

Please join in and offer suggestions and ideas for story beats, characters, slice of life scenarios, etc. I'll write another snippet to continue tomorrow.

>You had never been in a real fight.
>Sure, a few scraps as a kid.
>Insults, pushes, angry glares that felt world-ending back when school was the entire world.
>The fast heartbeat, bristled hairs, and sweaty palms…
>The world narrowing to just you and the mean kid…
>Nothing compared to this.
>You wished you thought about that before jumping.
>You landed gracefully on all fours, unnoticed.
>The trio continued their metallic meal.
>Aggron towered over everything nearby like a steel fortress.
>She ripped and sheared a truck apart with claws that tore metal like paper.
>You did not want to get close.
>You edged forward, paws raised in a non-threatening gesture.
>To draw her attention, and hoping not to startle her, you let your aura pulse gently.
>A soft blue glow enveloped your palms and faded away.
>Three pairs of blue eyes focused on you.
>Two were wide and petrified.
>One was furious.
>Aggron lumbered forward, putting her massive frame between you and her children.
>You did not want this to come to blows.
“Look, hey…”
>Her growl rumbled like thunder, even this far away.
“I don’t want to fight, okay? See?”
>You raised your paws higher.
>Aggron scowled and swiped her heavy arm in a wide arc.
>An oddly human gesture.
>Like shooing a fly away.
>The universal sign for “get out of here.”
>That raised your hopes.
>Maybe she couldn’t talk, but perhaps she wasn’t completely feral.
“You have to move, alright?”
>She roared loud enough to make you wince.
>”No. You move.” Was your interpretation.

>Her little ones shuffled behind the wrecked truck, wobbling on unsteady legs.
>They were so young they hadn’t mastered walking.
>They stumbled multiple times. Their chins clanged into the ground each time they tripped.
>You’d call them hatchlings if your gut wasn’t telling you they were human infants a week ago.
“It’s not safe here.”
>She stamped the ground, cracking the blacktop.
“You’re scaring a lotta people, big girl.”
>She dug her hands into the fractured parking lot.
>”Lotta parents and kids over there.” You added, hoping to appeal to her motherhood.
>“The police won’t stay back forever.”
>She grunted and yanked the ground, hefting a chunk of asphalt above her head.
>Loose dirt and rock speckled and dinged off her head and shoulders.
>”Think of your children, alright?“
>That set her off.
>Her aura flared with anger, righteous fury, and confusion.
>She was thinking of her children.
>And she believed you were far too close to them.
“C’mon...” You moaned, shifting to a defensive stance.

>Hundreds of pounds of rock hurtled where you stood a second ago.
>It slammed into a car door hard enough to dent it, and set off the car alarm.
>The shrieking noise made you grimace, but you kept focus on the giant.
>A car door hurled past you like a frisbee.
>A second door skid across the parking lot like a stone on water.
>Instead of ripples, a shower of sparks blew in all directions when it scrapped the ground.
“Cut it out!” You yelled over her tearing the steering wheel out. “I’m trying to help!”
>Dodging wasn’t hard, given your incredible agility, but it wasn’t safe.
>A tire grazed your fur.
>Far too close for comfort.
>But keeping this far away wasn’t achieving anything.
>Maybe you’d tire her out, but she may have stamina just as exceptional as yours.
>What you wouldn’t give to throw an aura sphere.
>Your palms barely glowed; it was difficult enough to make it appear when training.
>You couldn’t count on it now.
>Options were frightfully limited.
>Close range felt suicidal.
>You had to outthink her.

This brushes up a question I have whenever there’s human level intelligence animals, or a human TF’d into an animal. What keeps them from progressing up the technology tree? Could they eventually develop a steam engine? Mining and smelting ore? A computer?

Hmm. Maybe protag could feint one way and then juke the other way and close to get a few hits in during the Aggron's follow-through next time she hurls something. Then open the range again and rinse-repeat to wear her down.

>>58102646
I don't see anything in Mystery Dungeon that suggests the Pokemon in that setting CAN'T achieve higher levels of technology - it just seems like they haven't yet. I was inspired by both a terrible webcomic I read and The Slugma Powered Home to try my hand at an information age take on Mystery Dungeon - think ca. 1990. I've envisioned a temparate, coastal city with mostly low, squat buildings, many of which are quite old, with only a few skyscrapers. So sort of a seaside Paris complete with extensive underground catacombs that, in this case, hide secrets from a fallen human civilisation if you venture deep enough.

I went through every Pokedex entry and determined that 661 out of the 898 non legendary/mythical/UB/paradox species could dwell in the inner city in significant numbers, and that most of the housing demand is for Pokemon on the smaller side. As such, I calculated that around 75% of the buildings would be around 2-2.6 meters per storey depending on application, another 19% would be 2.9-3.8m per storey (in line with IRL human buildings) and the remaining 6% would be 4.2-5.4m per storey (perhaps situated in their own enclave, like a reverse Little Rodentia from Zootopia).

I can share more of the nitty-gritty details if you're interested

We have to wear down her energy. Avoid hits while moving as little as possible. Try to bait her into overexerting herself. Only hit her when it's easy to remind her that we can. Her body is heavier, so we should have the advantage in a battle of endurance.

>a strong central government tracking and formalizing the integration of these former humans
I guess that'd depend on how many of them there are. Might be an extension of the "classical" guild system, which often attracted the humans of the old days.
Or maybe with advancements in science they've stopped believing in humans altogether.

I've seen this topic broached in non-Pokemon stuff, but usually they have to make the main character a polymath to make it make sense. I know loosely how a lightbulb works (vacuum, electricity, filament) but if you asked me how to build any of those things I'd be stumped.
It could be neat to have a human with knowledge of what could be possible work with Pokemon who know what's currently possible. So the human says "if you stick a filament into a vacuum tube and electrocute it it makes light" and then Pokemon Leonardo da Vinci has to figure out how to make a vacuum tube with available Pokemon abilities.

Thanks anon. Okay, so in the first place, I envision their industrial revolution as being a slower, more drawn out process than ours due to the, "But we already have a Pokemon for that" factor. When you have electric and fire types to power machinery and flying types to transport goods it disincentives you from developing modern power and transport infrastructure. Not enough to prevent their eventual adoption, but enough to slow things down. Indeed, small scale transport still has a hard time competing with fast and teleportation-capable Pokemon, so their trucks and aircraft are behind where ours were in 1990 (I'm picturing anachronistic 60s-looking trucks, and their version of Concorde is brand new rather than already being 15 years old), while the large-scale bulk transport offered by rail and sea is on pace. A minor demographic echo of the industrial revolution is that fire types remain over-represented in blue collar industrial positions, while water types (who were employed as union busters in large numbers as ground and rock types would be too damaging to the factories) remain over-represented in law enforcement - when the city's inhabitants picture a sterotypical beat cop, they picture a Buizel.

Architecturally, entire buildings wouldn't be formed after a Pokemon like in Rescue Team and Explorers, but buildings WOULD have aesthetic elements, facades, etc. modled after a relevant Pokemon.

Due to the presence of species like Weezing and Garbodor, pollution is kept well in hand, with clean streets and waterways. Even the sewers (one of several places on the city to function like a mystery dungeon) are home to hardy Magikarp and Feebas, as well as a Milotic who fancies themselves the place's guardian, serving as the dungeon boss.

A feature landmark of the city is the vertical airport, a skyscrapers with numerous large openings for flying types (especially Corviknight) laden with passengers and goods.

Will post more if there's interest.

I was actually writing something like that, with Magearna as the leader of a Techno Faction, wanting to bring a bit more civilization back to the Bronze Age Pokemon Dungeon world.
After all she is the fusion of a princess and a pokemon, she came from the land of castles and steam engines.
This civilization is too primitive for her.

Huh. Great minds really do think alike. It wasn't actually me, but a friend who suggested a while back that Magearna would be found on the deepest levels of the catacombs, forlornly maintaining what rusting human artefacts she can, her sense of purpose lost like the Butler from The Fall: Unbound.

I guess continuing on, then, another significant landmark would be a single earthscraper placed adjacent to the river, with flooded sections and tunnel sections to permit dedicated water-dwelling and underground-dwelling Pokemon to participate in inner city commerce. With burrowing Pokemon around, there's always a risk of sinkholes or damaged utility conduits, so certain ground types like Excadrill are extremely highly prized in infrastructure maintenance. There would also be something akin to an open pit mine or quarry near the city that serves as a preferable home for those who prefer to dwell underground permanently, particularly large ones like Ttar and Steelix.

While the vertical airport would be
situated near the CBD, airports for actual aircraft would be positioned well outside of the CBD - nothing like an LAX equivalent in this setting. More like Melbourne Airport if anything. Why? Well, remember Cactus 1549. ATC hearing a pilot declare "hit birds, we've lost thrust on both engines" hits different when the birds that just got blended by your aircraft pay taxes.

I don't have a full layout for the typical Pokehouse mapped out yet, but given the anatomical variations, it seems to me that bean bags and doggy bed-style beds would be popular. If you're rich enough to be able to afford to pay many times what the average 'mon would pay for a high end appliance, you can contract a Rotom helper for your home.

If you wanna hear them, I have some concepts for some smaller slice of life moments in the setting as well, a few of which a friend has actually drawn for me.
