I disagree with everything you just said. Ash is tan because he is a boy who spends time outside. Japanese and white people tan. We see his mother in the show, she is pale. Oak is also tan. I always interpreted them as Japanese. "Ash" derives from "Satoshi" the Japanese creator of Pokemon.

You argue something you cannot prove, that Ash and pokemon would be considered woke if it was released today. I don't think Ash would be considered anything but Japanese and therefore, not woke, because the basic assumption would be that he represents his country of origin, Japan. Same as ever.

It isn't the black dude that is the problem, it is the opportunity cost. By inexplicably forcing a black protag, players miss out on a Greek protag. That is unfair to Greeks, who are an underrepresented minority. Same with raceswapping their gods and heroes, it is cultural appropriation.
