ITT: Post your unique gym ideas
Your challenge is to make a creative gym leader challenge. They must NOT be about elemental affinities at all. Instead, your gym leaders and their gym should revolve about Pokémon strategies or facets the player should learn, challenges that the user should face, or world-building element blocks that you can build a gym about.

Here is my example. Gym 1 leader is a jester, and her trainers are all jokers. They use silly Pokémon with even sillier sets, showing the user that being strong does not mean just being able to overpower the challenger. Despite this not being serious, it will still be a challenge for the player.

I've always liked the idea of a gym themed around pseudo-legendaries, but it's the first gym in the game, so it only uses the first stage shitters like Gible, Larvitar, and Beldum. The preponderance or dragon types could even be a good tutorial moment to teach the young'uns to use stuff besides their starter. Maybe make the regional bird or route 1 rodent ice-type.

>doesn't knows the stats pokemon have with full EVs
It's to round them nicely. And attack is boosted on the first two so that they take more damage from supersonic.
Focus on the actual stats

They also have natures lowering their key stats or defenses.

That's reminds me of that one romhack that only has pseudoscience as starters. But since pseudo 1st stages are garbage, the game is much harder than intended.

You know, a dragon-type second gym would actually be an interesting idea, that Gamefreak will never do because challenging the 5-year olds is no longer in vogue.

>first gym
>three hold items
I get the oval Stone for the ace but the others aren't in line with how a first gym leader should work.

If you're talking about Pokemon Unbound, I didn't find the pseudo starter was particularly crippling, but maybe that's just me

Maybe Cyclizar could work as a scary, Miltank-style ace?

I always wanted to do a Pokemon gym on an army base. Instead of the retired veteran playing up his vocation for the kids kind of vibes Surge gives, the leader would be an active, full bird colonel who cuts a very proper and respectful figure - everything prim and polished. Gentlemanly, like Robert E. Lee. The obvious theming (and the one I had in mind when I first came up with the idea) would be fighting types of course, but what if it was teamwork-oriented Pokemon instead? Still single battles (because I honestly find doubles gimmicks in gym battles a bit meh), but the leader has 'mons that "squadron" with multiple entities, such as Falinks, Wishiwashi, Vespiquen (with her "Order" moves), Dugtrio (with Arena Trap), Klinklang, and Exeggutor. Each 'mon could even represent an aspect of the military:

Falinks: Representative of the land power and discipline (also courage with No Retreat).
Wishwashi: Representative of naval power and strength in numbers. (could be swapped out with Slowking to represent military intelligence. Octillery obviously works too, but is less interesting IMO)
Vespiquen: Representative of air power and CnC. (Vesipquen's kinda crappy, so might need a mega for this to work)
Dugtrio: Representative of misdirection and strategy. (Arena Trap is, in a sense, an encirclement)
Klinklang: representative of industry and cyber warfare. (can be swapped out for Metagross on the rematch team. Magnezone line is too overdone)
Exeggutor: Representative of resourcing and logistics.

Other gyms in the region could follow a similar pattern, with Pokemon like Floatzel, Arcanine, and Blissey on a team themed around emergency services, or Conkeldurr, Steelix, and Coalossal on a team themed around construction, mining, and other blue collar industry.

What's the joke with Unown besides it being shit?

Sounds about right.

The games should be double battles after the 4th gym. Take the training wheels off and suddenly the strategies open up tremendously.

The hidden power is meant to counter the player's starter. Three different Unowns depending on the player's starter.
The idea is to use something other than starter to avoid the extreme damage.

Stop trying to make double battles happen. They are not gonna happen.

It's fine to base your whole game on double battles (I actually found Colosseum pretty fun), but I've always found switching between the two to be very clunky.

How would this be a challenge, the EVsed mons who are still at L10 barely make their base stats difference from normal ones noticeable.
The only decent challenge would be the Luvdisc...if it had Sp.Atk and Attract, probably meant to be stalled by the early bug shitmon with Poison status.

Your idea gave me a pretty fun idea myself.
>Gym is set in a casino
>Team is Bonsly, Luvdisc, Inkay and Carbink as a reference to the 4 suits of cards
The leader would be a dealer obviously

Maybe not a gym leader material but finding it in a normal playthrough would be memorable enough.
