First I need to check whether the Sapphire's actually been domesticated properly. So making sure she's housetrained, doesn't bite, doesn't steal from the table, drink toilet water or chew on the walls. Just because she's wearing clothes doesn't mean she's been trained. Ironically the only good part of ORAS was the part at very end where everyone actually stops the meteor, instead of just talking about it. At least it's the one part I wouldn't change too much besides nuking half the cameos. If I ever see one more person insist that part has to change more because Sapphire should've worn the rock star outfit since it has pants and Ruby should've worn the pop star dress, as if that is a completely normal non pozzed critique to make, I will go fucking insane.

Ash and Co are told by Oak to deliver the GS Ball to Professor Ivy in the Orange Islands, she can't open the ball, and in the meantime Ash hears of the Orange League so he island hops with a baby Lapras he saved to compete. Charizard also begins to respect Ash around then.

Brock temporarily stays with Ivy and is replaced by a painter named Tracey (they thought international audiences would dislike Brock and made, I quote verbatim, an Anglo-Saxon looking character to replace him, keep in mind only Korea dubbed the anime at the time the eps were produced)

Overall, I actually do like the arc, the series gets full license to do it's own things, and Pokemon are treated genuinely as if they're animals in habitats with color variations and such. It's pretty good, no Brock notwithstanding. Johto is the real slog of OS.

GS was still being delayed, with no news on it after Spaceworld 1997 until March 1999, so they made this island hopping mini arc. GS still got a minor delay to November anyway, so the Johto anime ended up debuting 2 months before the games released in Japan.

Game Freak was well behind on releasing GS (doesn't help that they were stalling for time by making Yellow Version, and scrapped their original GS plan that can be seen the in SpaceWorld demo), so the anime stalled for time by handing Ash the GS Ball (a plotline that would be dropped during Johto due to M04), having him win 4 quirky badges, and then having a 6v6 with a "champion" trainer. I believe it was 36 episodes long, then they just sent Ash back to Kanto and then into Johto, as originally planned. Aside from the trophy Ash won from the Orange Islands being seen in the background in one shot at the start of Journeys (and a few brief mentions of Professor Ivy), the fact that he was there was basically never mentioned again.

Dude always looked like just another implied Japanese anime guy to me. Wasn't Brock always meant to be Japanese too, just tanned? The squinted eyes also came off like a stylistic choice to make him look more intense in his original Sugimori art, with the furrowed brows and narrowed eyes making him look like a tough first gym leader. It's his anime depiction that made him look more harmless. Anyway the only non-Japanese character from Kanto I remember is Lt. Surge unless they've since retconned his American background to an Unovan one.

I also remember seeing some /vp/ posts whining about AG being a downgrade compared to Johto, but I'm too lazy to rewatch the anime myself to decide whether Johto was a slog or le hidden gem. I always loved Ash's Bayleef though and wasn't happy he left it behind. May's Skitty (who stays unevolved thank fuck) almost replaced Bayleef for me, but not fully.

The last time I did a rewatch of the full series, Ash only had 2 Johto badges before I was begging for May to show up already because the Ash-Brock-Misty dynamic had become so painfully stale. By contrast, I never grew tired of May, Dawn, Iris (it's true), Serena, Bonnie, or the Alola girls in their respective series. Misty is the only character who ever felt like they'd overstayed their welcome. Even Brock, four generations in, never reached that point for me, even when he kinda stopped doing much besides provide exposition for the TV audience during Ash's battles.

It was only when people in this thread started acknowledging a few frames, and then someone went back and realized it was a lot more than just a "few" frames. Anyway Ruby might initially come off as racist, he's the insensitive autist type who can accidentally say rude or politically incorrect things. (Both he and Sapphire start out socially inept, but Sapphire's empathy helped her adjust and make friends faster.) But I doubt Ruby's actually bigoted, he used to live in cities and travelled to multiple different regions, so he's used to meeting foreigners. He's also disconnected from his roots (a lot of his character is just the "RS protagonist moved from Johto to Hoenn" thing taken too seriously) and seemingly has a mild form of outgroup preference (a mental illness that Sapphire doesn't seem to have). So I could see him being "colorblind" and extra nice to anyone who compliments his contest performances. But when shit hits the fan, he'll backstab anyone and everyone regardless of background because Ruby's priority isn't any group, his priority is just Sapphire.

Meanwhile it's Sapphire who has always lived in the countryside, and being so connected to nature and the land, she places high importance on Hoenn (her home region/heritage). Which can be extrapolated to loyalty to her ethnic group, as ingroup preference is natural and Sapphire doesn't ignore her natural instincts. It doesn't mean she hates everyone else, it's just preference. In fact she'd even go out of her way to treat everyone as equally as possible just to be kind, even though it could be a contradiction.

But her instincts may also contradict her desire to help the vulnerable. So if a situation occurs where an underprivileged racial minority group suddenly has interests competing with Sapphire's own ethnic group, and she's asked to pick sides. This will create cognitive dissonance inside her and depending on (You)r perspective, a moral dilemma. One that Sapphire might not know how to handle, as canonically she isn't even meant to be facing complicated moral dilemmas, that's Ruby's role. Also she's dumb.

Misty kept getting more and more 'close' to Ash for the entire arc, but of course any such development would have to be ignored afterwards. Also, Charizard began obeying Ash in an episode centered around their trust.

I didn't word myself that well, I meant that Ruby's conflict with his son should be significant, but not necessarily as serious as Ruby's conflict with Norman. Nearly all of Ruby's issues come back to his dad failing to communicate properly with him, so the best way to show Ruby breaking the cycle is to have him face a conflict with his own son (which doesn't have to be about career/running away again), but resolve it better than Norman did. So what was a years long drama between Norman and Ruby, could just be a few honest conversations between Ruby and his own son before they move on.

Sapphire causing more parental issues instead would be interesting, her being overly smothering would contrast Ruby's past of being overly distant. But compared to Ruby's in depth lineage of mental problems, Sapphire's background will just look empty in comparison, which is why I usually don't bother imagining her having issues with her kids later. Pokespe pretends Ruby and Sapphire's stories are complete 1:1 parallels, but the absence of Sapphire's mom destroys that idea. Ruby's issues with his dad affects everything in his life especially his confused masculinity, so you'd think Sapphire would have similar issues with her mom and her confused femininity. But AFAIK Sapphire's mom is only mentioned once in her Emerald arc bio, implying the mom isn't dead, but she's never appeared. It's annoying since both of Ruby's parents are shown while only Sapphire's dad (Prof Birch) is shown.

The worst part is Kusaka knows people want to know what's up with Sapphire's mom, it's the natural question when Ruby's dad is so important. But Kusaka intentionally keeps it vague, so we get picrel where Ruby/Sapphire have a bday party and the 1 dining table chair that Sapphire's mom would be sitting in, conveniently can't fit in frame.

Though if the ORAS epilogue reveals Sapphire's mom is Professor Sada or something just as retarded, people will start mailing razors to Kusaka's house again.

Meanwhile Sapphire blushing in ORAS is often used as a red herring, to give off the impression she's the one more emotionally invested in her relationship with Ruby. Because in comparison Ruby rarely blushes, I think most of the exceptions are Sapphire related but even then it's subdued. But in reality it's not that he doesn't feel anything, he's just that repressed and operating on a different emotional scale than Sapphire (who has always been a sperg). Which all becomes apparent later on, when as far back as RS it's actually Sapphire who keeps suggesting they break up, and Ruby who keeps acting vaguely suicidal at the thought of being apart from her.

Interesting stuff, though ORAS still sucks.

Not really, during that period besides the usual Ruby/Sapphire relationship drama, at most we learn that Ruby made himself and Sapphire new matching outfits. I guess it's also revealed that Sapphire knows about Ruby's lighter thing from Courtney, so as much as the meme is that he's always lying to Sapphire, Ruby actually tells her more about himself than he ever tells anyone else.

Link? That's cute. But also predictable, Blue (f) isn't the traditional battler type and is at a disadvantage if she's not allowed to break rules, so her team would be mowed down by Ruby's. Though nobody was going to believe it if Ruby beat Red either. Post RS Ruby seems to treat Pokemon battling as a social thing like basketball, or as a necessity when terrorists show up again, but he's only actually dangerous in berserk mode.

Emerald (the midget OC) beats Red. It's implied because Emerald's the one who wins the Frontier Symbol for the Battle Dome after the tournament. While I've never been sure about using the Pokedex holder tournament as evidence for power scaling, it's great for generating drama I guess.

But more importantly, I still have no idea who won the Gold vs Sapphire fight. The chances seemed like a total 50-50 to me.
