oddly, it feels like the staff (at least on these eps) isn't very good at drawing Dragonite. They're giving it a really fat nose and mouth, and the way its shoulder seems to be emerging from way behind its neck is really gross.

I really hope we reach a point where production can get back on track, the overall quality of illustrations is definitely the worst it's been since the anime went HD. If you can't even get a simple mon like Dragonite to look good then something needs to be fixed!!

I think what really doesn't land about Roy is that pre-timeskip, his described 'impulsivity' and childishness rarely ever resulted in anything happening, anyone reprimanding him outside of like, a singular gag with Orio, or him needing to learn a hard lesson. He was actually a pretty well behaved kid.

Then timeskip comes and he's traded out for a 'cool' version of himself that's weirdly judgmental towards Uruto. Uruto is definitely obnoxious but 'obnoxious' is actually refreshing in the overly saccharine, polite landscape of HZ, so having Roy turn into this critical, disapproving kid is odd to say the least.

Roy made the same mistakes as Uruto does and he knows with the things that are going on at the moment that letting him run wild is ending poorly.
His responses towards him were shit, you're right with that being judgemental but the reasoning as to why is pretty much clear and the anon with the point about Uruto being that iteration of Roy knew what he was saying.

I'm moreso talking about the general tone of the Roy/Uruto relationship. I like that Roy and Uruto are getting into a genuine conflict in the story, but what hasn't landed for me is Roy turning into a character who is first in line to disapprove or make a remark about how childish Uruto is. There's something very incongruent about it. Liko, Dot, and the rest of the crew always celebrated Roy and he was never really the subject of any ridicule or disapproval, so Roy comes across as super unlikable for this hard pivot where he turns up his nose at everything Uruto does.

Basically, Uruto is an engaging and animated cartoon character with lots of character quirks, which is a very good thing in a Pokemon show. It'd be nice to let more of his moments rock without having to cut to Roy calling him childish or impulsive.

Roy knows firsthand how this behavior can turn out. I get how it can be seen as jarring when Liko or Dot see things a bit differently but Roy being the one to tell Uruto to stuff his attitude makes sense.

I agree that doing it at harmless stuff like eating or such it gets grating from Roy's end. Depending on next week's episode, it might ease up a bit on Roy's part.

And this is why Journeys is such a colossal mistake. Of course HZ is gonna shill pokemons that have mega evolutions in ZA. Journeys in the other hand didn't need to add a shillcario and a dragonite(and I love Ash's Dragonite), specially since they had so many galarmons and reserves to choose from. Ash didn't got a single Galar starter, which I don't mind that Goh got all three of them but you can see how the writers didn't know how to handle Ash anymore.

Unfortunately, there aren't really a lot of great story examples within Horizons where Roy's specific actions lead to significantly undesirable outcomes. What happened to Friede was bad but it was a result of the collective adventure, not Roy doing some stupid shit. The only hard lessons Roy had to learn pre-timeskip were to do with gym battles. Roy was never challenged or prompted to grow out of any bad behavior because he really never had any to begin with.

That's why it feels like Roy went from a nice kid to a judgmental, snarky asshole. It doesn't feel like he grew up in any way, he just turned into someone who's quick to point out the flaws in someone else.

Journeys would've been better without Ash. I loved the format of weekly adventures largely unaffected by serialization and the need for continuous storytelling, and Goh was definitely above par for anipoke character writing, but the need to pander to nostalgia and longterm continuity (as well as giving Ash a team of shillmons) really held it back. I wasn't explicitly referring to Friede's accident. Roy saw what could've happened if he wasn't so lucky to be surrounded by others. Stepped up, took Cap with him and got started on getting the group back together to deal with the shit that has happened since then.

He just handled it very poorly by trying to keep Uruto from doing the same mistakes. Liko's single outburst at Uruto got the message home clearly and it stayed with Uruto because unlike Roy's remarks, she wasn't nagging him at every corner but put her foot down on something that could've bitten him in the ass down in the long term.
I am not gonna be surprised if he stop being an asshole at every corner by the following week.
