I don't think I ever used Geodude. It's slow and Water types are pretty common.
In casual playthroughs, for my team I usually pick other Ground types, and Rock is a type I almost never use (with the exception of Archeops).

He's surprisingly good in game even though a lot of people write him off.

Indeed Geodude is a great example of a vulnerable Pokemon getting a lot more mileage simply for being able to predict (or know, if playing shift) what your opponent will use next. I think I only used it on my first Johto run but I also remember it being good.

I never used it as a kid I thought it was weird he didn't have legs. It's why I didn't play Rayman

This thing is so good in every game its in but will perpetually be overlooked because of its status as a foddermon, it's pretty interesting honestly. I wonder if they'll ever make an early game rock/ground people actually want to keep. Garganacl I suppose.

I remember wasting my fire blast tm on one when I played yellow version. Should have gave it to something better like Charizard, Nidoking, Arcanine, Slowbro, Muk, Rhydon, Gyarados, Snorlax, Dragonite or Mewtwo. I don't hate the Geodude line. I just wish I could have gotten Golem without trading.

why does it even learn that
nothing about it is fire related
and its special stat is too ass to get any use out of it

The problem is being a trade evolution.
I like graveler because I didn't know it evolved when I was a kid.

I never bothered to use non trade evos other than Kingdra(traded seadra with a cousin that had a power guide and told me about it), Boldore and Gurdur from that point onwards. I'm so fucking grateful you can find wild Steelix in some games.

Trade evolutions just kill any interest.
To add to this as son as my pet rock evolved into garganacl I boxed it, what an atrocious design.

My explanation as a kid was that it could explode, therefore it was capable of creating fire.

Gen 1 follows to design philosophy that these are monster particularly these are mini kaijus. If you go watch some old godzilla movies you'll notice a of his foes can shoot some sort of blast somehow even if it doesn't seem related to them at all
