Actually, the peak of 2D Pokemon was Gen 2.
Gen 3 was an objective downgrade held back by the GBA's lack of backlight that demanded oversaturation of visuals combined with the fact Gen 3 just looked like Gen 2 with more colors (for the worse) and Gen 4 was too busy fucking around with 3D overworld mapping and mode 7-style texturing to actually have a sense of consistent style between characters and world (which Gen 5 only further iterated upon, exacerbating the problem in tandem with shitty battle sprite tweening.)
