She grew up on the streets of Lumiose City as an orphaned hobo. Looker effectively adopted her as his official assistant in the Looker Detective Agency, but she still felt bad for not giving him anything back in return. So she got a part-time job at a shady laboratory studying sleep, which was actually a front for Team Flare remnants, specifically Xerosic, to put the camouflaging, remote-controlled Expansion Suit into testing. Emma put on the suit and slept, and while asleep Xerosic would control her body remotely to disguise as other people and commit crimes.
Eventually Xerosic developed a fatherly affection to Emma and stopped controlling her. When Looker finally arrested Xerosic, Xerosic gave the Expansion Suit to Emma, who couldn't believe Mr. Xerosic was a bad guy. Looker then signed over the deed to the Looker Detective Agency to Emma, promoting her to Head Detective in his stead, and he left Kalos, presumably permanently.
