Its funny that their immediate direction after Gold and Silver was to make an entire gen full of freaks, many of which don't even seem to be based on anything in particular. Some were even particularly far along like that rabbit-esque thing in the top right, and it looks okay enough but what the fuck is even the idea?

This is part of why they hate these leaks.
That and the gen7 flying eeveelution problem.

They rework old failed designs a lot, and ending up out in the open means fans get a chance to rework them too, and if a fan rework is too close to their good one they can't use it or it becomes a plagiarism dispute.

I legit think the flying eevee problem is part of why the quality of designs has gone down so much.

They have to make designs either so original that no fan has ever thought of anything remotely similar, or so stupid no one else was willing to publish them with their name on it.

A wooden toy/robot iirc. A lot of these designs have a very crayon/toy aesthetic which ironically the final gem 3 designs are the exact opposite of with sleek patterns and edges. These guys mostly look like cheap ikea toys.

I honestly can see it. For example, when fans tried to design a Grass/Fire pokemon, hot pepper was extremely common.
Then Game Freak gave us Scovillain and I personally think that the design is really mid.

i have a very vivid memory of planning to get this thing
i was going to get the item for the pink fish and my friend was going to get the one for this and then we would trade and bam id have a huntail and hed have gay fish
i think we just didnt do that at all and did something actually fun instead

Clamperl, Huntail, Gorebyss. Gorebyss is easily remembered because despite being a pink eel wearing a seashell bikini top, its name is "gore + abyss".
Also all three are memorable because Clamperl is better than its evolutions. The DeepSeaTooth that evolves it to Huntail doubles Clamperl's Special Attack. Give it Trick Room and it will demolish with its 148 SpA.

The reward for it is too late in the damn game to really justify the effort put into the fucking thing, especially when you'll already have even better Water types by that point. Like if you put the effort into finding a Feebas that's earlier in the game that's infinitely more bang for your buck than wasting your single Deep Sea Scale for Gorebyss

And there's infinitely better options like Swampert, Gyarados (which didn't need to be in this game), Ludicolo, Whiscash, Wailord, Crawdaunt AND Kingdra, which is just as hard to get but actually worth the effort. Even Pelipper or Tentacruel are still better
