The Battle Frontier was mostly shit in Emerald unless you had the specific kind of autism that would let you enjoy it. ORAS had plenty of great side content that was more enjoyable, the real disappointment was that Emerald's Battle Frontier never got the fix it needed.

Third versions are literally just standalone DLC for the period before online releases were viable. It's the same as when Capcom would sell enhanced versions of Monster Hunter, Street Fighter, etc and now that's all handled by DLC for the base game too.
