Why is this such a common stylistic choice these days? I cannot be the only one who thinks it looks jarring in otherwise very clearly 3D environments.

What's funny is there were really only 2 megas that survived in the double restricted format. Mega Metagross and Mega Salamence.
Mega Kang never won worlds after 2015. A lot of the megas need unique buffs.

Why does /vp/ constantly complain about Charizard and Lucario being shillmons but rarely talks about Gardevoir in the same way?
Could it be that Gardevoir is the shillmon for /vp/ and they don't like to acknowledge they're being pandered to?

Gardevoir isn't on the same level of shillmon as the likes of Charizard, Lucario or Eevee.
It's popular and gets merch, but it's not constantly being promoted by the entire franchise like the usual suspects.

Gardevoir's popularity is organic.
Does it get preferential treatment? Yes. But compared to the usual suspects, it's clearly on a step or two down in the priority ladder.
The other thing is that while Gardevoir may get a shitton of merch it's never appearing 24/7 through every single fucking piece of media. It's never constantly put as the center-piece.
Like, look at the recent Dragonite push. Have you ever seen Gardevoir have a moment like that? There's not been.
Gardevoir is adequately popular, and gets adequate preferential treatment. This is how shilling should be like.

it's because different people handle animation and VFX, and the VFX people think it looks cool. they're right.
it's kind of been a thing for a long time but this kind of mixed media animation was truly thrust into mainstream popularity by the first spiderverse film. again, to the benefit of artists everywhere, because it's really cool.

gardevoir is shilled now because it was organically popular with the fans for years, while lucario was straight up designed to be shilled and they really laid it on thick to the point where it was kind of annoying for a while. charizard is a bit of a different story where it wasn't really designed to be any more popular than the other gen 1 starters and organically became the fan favorite it's known for being, and so in that regard it's more like gardevoir, but around gen 6 or so they started laying the shilling on for it extra thick, pushing it way harder than basically any other mon up to that point and really any other mon since, and so from about that point forward it started to mirror lucario more. the three are honestly a pretty good case study for the spectrum of "shilled because fans like it" and "shilled because they want fans to like it" - gardevoir falls squarely in the former group and lucario in the latter, while charizard, for all its shilling, still lands directly in the middle.
