Yeah, they went for simpler designs to make it easier on the anime and merch teams out of I suppose some Japanese sense of honor and empathy or whatever. Then for Gen 3 they no longer wanted to do that so they made more complicated designs like Groudon with all its lines or Blaziken with an (at the time) very ‘out there’ design for Pokemon because they didn’t like intentionally limiting themselves

I was there, Blaziken was the KFC Pokemon, Karate Fighting Chicken.
I've been on /vp/ since it's conception, the people here liked Blaziken and the "hate" here for Blaziken started when a YouTube video by DYKgaming was uploaded.
It was some of the most unnatural shit I've seen, same with the Johto hate, people here dubbed HGSS the ultimate Pokemon game.

I've also been here since this place was called /tr/. While it's true that some idiots were saying Blaziken "looks like a digimon" back then, they were obviously just a vocal minority and everyone else loved the chicken. The notion about Blaziken's design being disliked by significant portion of the fanbase only started gaining traction when it became a deflection for the criticism of the increasingly humanoid designs of newer starters.

There is an old interview where Sugimori mentions that pokémon designs "took a backseat" during Gen3, compared to other aspects of the game. I'd love it if somebody could find it so hoennbabs could get a taste of their own medicine.
