Ash winning was kinda obvious though since until Johto Gary was a pushover and it's one of the very few occasions where he actually gets genuine wins over Ash.
Retrospectively in Kanto, Gary's advantages and "wins" were largely due to nepotism since by the time he got to the League he choked in the Top 32. No matter how badly Ash has placed, he's never been that low in a League, including the Kanto one. And that League was mostly a bunch of shitters anyway.
