Anyway found the raw, Ruby beat Green (m) holy shit? And people call Emerald the gary stu but this is worse. I can believe Ruby beating Blue (f) since she never made battling her career, but not Ruby beating League runner-up/gym leader Green (m) I refuse. This is officially the worst manga of all time. I'm going to ignore this thoughever

But if I had to make up some lore reason for this bullshit, the Hoenn Pokedex holders were particularly plagued by mental illness for some reason, with personalities more extreme than most of the characters who came before them. Mostly when it comes to Ruby and Sapphire anyway, Emerald was just kind of there and he matures a lot more later on. They all ended up hyper specializing in their talents but were fuck ups everywhere else especially with their social skills. So Ruby could be smart enough to excel at things that doesn't involve relationships, but narratively he's some cursed vague atheist who's permanently dead inside. Most Pokespe MCs don't have "mentally ruined forever" as part of their character but Ruby does.

Meanwhile desu even Sapphire has OP mary sue levels of magic superpowers herself, down to the narrative almost always implying she has the moral high ground which not even Ruby gets. But Sapphire also gets hard nerfed by both her own stupidity (thinking she's a dog, being illiterate, "Ruby totally won't lie to me again WAIT OMG") and Kusaka/execs, so you never get to see her go all out. So she might as well not have those powers at all (unless her powers suddenly reappear for a minute when they're convenient for the shitty plot)

ORAS Brendan has always been that brown though. I didn't like his redesign at first but now I appreciate it, because it helps distinguish the RSE continuity from the inferior ORAS one. You don't see ORAS and RSE Brendan getting mixed up with each other in fanart the way RSE and ORAS May do. Hoenn is also one of the few places in PokeJapan where you could believably end up that tanned.

Though of course, Browndan was also clearly a result of DIE shit. But it was Unova that introduced the concept years earlier, Hoenn remakes just followed in its new design (((philosophy))).

Demographic change in France didn't change much since when XY was in development. It's literally a punchline here that France is full of Algerians and black people, though that's a case of pot calling kettle black.

I also think the fact that regions post Unova are just theme park versions of their inspiration and cover a whole country instead of a part of one is also why. It feels like they just looked at the more cosmopolitan big cities of the country and based the whole region on that and Getty Images. In the manga Ruby is in some ways RSE Brendan's complete opposite, where Ruby's openly obsessed with cute Pokedolls/Pokemon/things in general. His unhinged reactions to cute shit are heavily emphasized, both before and after character development so it's not something he outgrows, as if he sees cute things like dress up dolls or babies. Which initially seems expected. Sure Ruby's supposed to be the contest fag anyway and him acting like a freak is just comic relief, it's just another quirk.

But after it turns out Ruby's very straight, in hindsight the main twist wasn't even "lol boy likes girly shit". The twist was how there's a clear throughline between his cute thing obsession, to his past trauma's link to "tarnished innocence", to his reverence for purity as a virtue, to his deranged attraction to Sapphire (whose retardation and emotional vulnerability makes her cute/pure, or at least she's meant to come off that way by the end of RS/E once she calms down a bit). The difference being Ruby felt safer openly gushing over inanimate objects/nonverbal Pokemon, but when it came to a real human being with the capacity to reject him, out of fear Ruby repressed his feelings for Sapphire instead. Until his feelings burst out anyway and accidentally doomed the timeline then killed a bunch of people. Because simping makes him stupid. Basically Ruby's behavior towards Sapphire is just an extra mentally ill evolution of his behavior around cute Pokemon. A mix of both fawning (feminine) but also being fiercely protective of them (masculine)

I feel like RS (climax notwithstanding) is the last time the manga is actually any level of very good. DP felt like it's shooting out these "iconic" moments in an attempt to repeat RS' volume sales boom and the less said about the remake+3rd version arcs the better.

Black/White as characters or at least as a pairing seem popular to me. But the circumstances around them affected their optics. Gen 5 was the breaking point for Pokespe's worst decline in quality, on top of the gen 5 games themselves being such a departure from tradition. And shipfags really wanted Black/White to be Ruby/Sapphire 2.0 (as in undeniably canon, setting the bar quite high) but it didn't happen, causing alot of disappointment. Then the years long BW2 hiatus all culminated in an ending that wasn't worth the wait, and everyone realized their time was being wasted.

But at least people like Black and White, because people who give a shit about Blake (Pokespe Nate) and Whitley (Pokespe Rosa) are rarer than unicorns. Blake is genuinely the most hated Pokespe protagonist which doesn't help Unova's reputation. Meanwhile as controversial as Ruby is, he's more likely to be one of someone's favorites than one of their most hated but he's usually one of the 2, he's rarely just in the middle of the list. I've also never seen a Sapphire hater, at worst some might find her annoying and self righteous, but it's not like she ever gets to do anything extreme enough to warrant real controversy compared to other characters.

Sapphire stopped being a main character the moment she stopped actively using jungle vines. After volume 19, her vine only cameos again in a single ORAS flashback panel where she'd tied Ruby up in the woods and was dragging him up a cliff (for non sexual reasons).

Sapphire's illiteracy despite being a professor's daughter is one of those things that sort of get handwaved away. It's initially just a "lmao Tarzan can't read" joke, but later Sapphire being stupid ends up being central to both her character and the plot, so there actually a point to her being illiterate.

Otherwise though looking any deeper into it just leads to contradictions, for example trying to blame Prof Birch for neglecting to teach Sapphire to read. But the same way Ruby and Sapphire are opposites, Prof Birch is also meant to be the laid back comic relief dad who has a great relationship with his daughter, while Norman's the strict distant dad with a poor relationship to his son. Though desu the RS arc flip flops a bit and couldn't decide whether Sapphire was as neglected as Ruby when younger. Or whether Sapphire's mom even exists. A lot of her backstory just seems like an afterthought compared to Ruby's.

One of the reasons why Sapphire doesn't get explored as much as Ruby does in RS is because her half of the story sometimes ends up being the support to Ruby's more serious scenes. For example following the Ruby vs Norman fight (which was kino at least), Sapphire goes to Mauville and ends up in literal slapstick comedy routines while Wattson makes shitty puns for half an hour. The purpose of the Mauville bullshit was for the overall story to release tension from Ruby's serious fight with a bunch of jokes. But as a result Sapphire ends up in joke shenanigans without any real depth, sort of wasting time that could've been used to flesh her out more before the volume 19 RuSa drama. But there probably wasn't enough time.

Prior to volumes 19-22, the most angsty Sapphire gets is at Mt Chimney after Team Aqua gets away, and she has a generic "oh no I failed" tantrum. Which she gets over after 1 page anyway. Her despair would've been more compelling if the scene hinted at why the loss hurt her so personally due to her past.
