I was writing a massive complaint about how Gamefreak lost the touch and this crap was too goofy, but then I watched the trailer and scrapped my complaint.
This is intended to be a horror / edgy design, just fat like those bloated zombies in games.
The face and lips are still awful but I respect the decision of the Pokémon being so full of acid it's choking itself to contain it from killing everyone around it.

Because only the usage of a Mega Stone and a Key Stone need that bond with a trainer. Mega evolution has to do with an over abundance of life energy and is basically the idea that this is what a Pokemon's final evolution looked like before humans came along and started living together with Pokemon.
