Their options were limited, especially because they probably wanted three that did not have mega evolution yet and didn't have a game in a while.

Outside of comp, what exactly is wrong with the Johto starters? Their designs are inoffensive at worst, it doesn’t seem like they’re very contentious overall. It’s like people just think they’re boring more than anything else.
