This is false. Dunsparce is one of my favorite Pokemon. I thought it didn't need an evolution since it was only really hurt by a lackluster typing and powercreep (nuPokemon is bad with this).

That's the point of the Tsuchinoko: it's a cryptid that's basically unremarkable, aside from its slightly deformed appearance. In real life, it could have been a snake digesting large prey, a short-legged lizard, or a reptile with achondroplasia.

That was the joke with Ash in the anime: a Pokémon that was unremarkable, but he couldn't catch it.

the series has gone out of its way to paint this picture with game mechanics, the anime, newer dex entries and hell even spin-off games like PMD - dunsparce is and always has been a jokemon

The idea that Dunsparce is meant to be rare AND useless is purely headcanon garbage. Dunsparce's dex entries don't even mention rarity despite doing so for other Pokemon until Ultra Moon. It's rarity is on par with many other Pokemon in Gen 2. Its stats aren't intended to be bad in Gen 2 and it's very much usable. Also nice job ignoring everything else to cry about your headcanon being what the devs intended from the beginning.

Dunsparce design-wise is a Normal-mon with good HP, balanced stats, and slow speed, and a good moveset in Gen 2. You can say the end result makes it weak but that's not the intention. Porygon is outclassed and kind of weak in Gen 1, but that doesn't mean Gamefreak was intending to make some message about gambling not being worth it, or intended for Porygon to be a bad mon.

It is no more "meek and weak" than most other Gen 2 mons. Its stats are similar to many other single stage mons like Gligar, Sneasel, and Misdreavus, none of which anyone would characterize as "intentionally weak". Hell, it's stronger than Corsola, another mon no one would go "oh the Pokemon is intended to be weak".

And the point? It's a goofy Japanese pun monster ightly based on the tsuchinoko and bee while adding its own elements. That's all. I know most nuPokemon fans need their designs to be over the top, incredibly goofy, and in your face about the EPIC REFERENCE they are, but sometimes a monster can be a monster.

porygon has a niche in gen 1 ou in being really annoying to snorlax, and got an evolution immediately. not even a little comparable. compare to, say, wigglytuff, who isn’t supposed to be that great but still has a better main attacking stat, equal speed, and essentially the same bulk (more hp, but less defense and special defense essentially cancels out). or fellow low stats normal type who finally got an evolution in sv, girafarig, who is way more usable in a normal play through with much better offensive stats. anyone who has used umbreon or blissey in playthroughs knows how annoying it can be to try and use something with sub 80 attacking stats against NPCs, and dunsparce isn’t nearly as useful defensively as them
