Returning to collecting after taking a break since Evolving skies. Been hunting every couple of days, seems like major retailers barely even restock any more. I used to be able to go to my local target on Thursdays for ETBs and packs. Haven't seen anything on any shelves anywhere. Card shops have everything marked up, so I've been buying cheap singles off TCG player.

Anyone have any tips or unconventional places that sell cards near or at retail? Or are distributers all paid off? I'm pretty close to just buying Japanese stuff, but being able to, ya'know, read the cards would be nice.

Actual question but do you guys play the game or has this hobby just turned into buying favorites and appreciating the artwork within the cards. Like is a 100+ card that high just due to artwork or does it offer an advantage gameplay wise for having a different attack than other's of the same monster?

This is the collector thread, there is a thread for people who actually play. Part of this thread is people who appreciate the cards/their favorites, the other part of the thread is investors/scalpers etc.
There are some cards that are more expensive because they're in the meta but those are typically just modern (the last several sets). Different card arts have no effect on gameplay, some people just like to make their deck of all max rarity cards.

I used to play for quite a bit but the tcg is, quite frankly, braindead compared to the others. The decks basically play themselves with little variance and most of the skill involved is knowledge checks of other decks.

Felt like I had to further make my binder more unique then the average 151 collector by putting the fossil cards before the fossil mon. Its a bit janky and breaks up the numbering, but in all fairness including the poster collection starter promos basically janked it from the get go any way.
Also I really like including the baby shinies adds a little extra flare to break up the otherwise expected binder flip through. Really glad china included baby shinies in their 151 set, makes this binder feel like an English rendition of chinese 151. The Pokemon Center stamp snorlax is icing on the cake. Cant believe how easy it was to order pokemon center etbs back then. Its value has really gone up since.

Its really too bad they didnt give Moltres & Articuno cards that showed their perspective in SIR or IR format. Nonetheless super cool card featuring all the legendary birds.
The non-holo moltres is pretty neat, picked that up out of a starter deck.
The dragonite mcdonalds confetti foil is a pretty neat holo shake up, though pikachu also has it.
Mewtwo is bad ass, and the mew is from a honolulu 2024 championship deck, has a little grey signature on it.

Blank spot for a ultra ball league stamped Mew, that i'll never own.
Umm theres another worlds deck mew with a different signature on it.
Lets Play League stamp mew and regular ex mew there as well.
Got a couple paldean fates reprints, the bubble mew also there.
Didnt put the metal mew into the binder, it gets to hang out with jumbos outside of it.

151 has been a hoot to collect, a lot of fun.
It was the only set completely free from the glass hat scourge that plagued scarlet & violet. It was like a little safe protected haven. An Oasis against the new & goofy.
The first and only set in Pokedex order. Black bolt and white flare came close, but no cigar with the two set split.
The long awaited return of Kadabra, a very historic welcome back home. So glad that dude dropped his lawsuit victory.
Its a beautiful thing, a modern set for the vintage collectors.
A near master piece, some of those trainers were wack to include, but whatever, nothings perfect.

That is honestly a bad copy with the texture bleeding all over the text and type symbol on the top left.
Pic is a good example of a good copy with very visible pokemon centre stamp on lower left and minimal texture bleed that actually fooled a vendor into buying it for 3k.

Vintage is moving the slowest it has arguably ever been, at least singles wise. Old cards have no nostalgia pull for the current audience and have no demand between the average collector anymore. Meanwhile Black & White - Sun & Moon cards have shot to the moon because they both look good and people missed out on em.

Not saying modern isnt shilled, but vintage is doing extremely poorly in almost all regards. Having a high price point doesn't mean its actually selling well.
