The fact Sapphire doesn't (over)think like Ruby does is portrayed as a good thing in the magic spiritual context of their PokeUniverse, where their gods are objectively real. But at the end of the day, she is both actually "stupid" and her "stupidity" is a huge part of her character.

But if she was suddenly dropped into an alternate universe where the narrative is that gods don't exist, Sapphire would just be retarded full stop with no recourse. She'd just look actually mentally disabled. On the other hand Ruby would suddenly be the enlightened athiest character, vindicated by his "careful reasoning" (logic) similar to a lot of contemporary postmodern media, especially from the west.

Either way Ruby and Sapphire are at opposite extremes when it comes to how their minds work. The RS arc implied they should be working together anyway to balance out their extremes, since even if Sapphire had the moral high ground she is still stupid.

Unrelated but what do you make of the scene in vol 22 where Sapphire bursts into tears after seeing the Trick Master again? I was always confused since reading that page as a child. Is it meant to be Sapphire finally breaking down her mental walls or her being moved.

But comes off like this. What is THE major emotional development for her (finally opening up) looks like a joke, because it happens at the literal worst possible time in the entire story.

1 - The RS arc has 87 whole chapters, but the one time Sapphire is shown displaying this major emotional vulnerability (straight up crying) happens right after Norman's corpse gets cremated right in front of Ruby. So her feelings look trivial compared to whatever Ruby is going through at the time.

2 - The "joke" feeling could be intentional. There's a trend in RS where Sapphire's given comedic relief scenes following Ruby's serious scenes, as a tonal palate cleanser. The first main example is in Mauville (chapter 203) where Sapphire coincidentally meets the Trick Master there too. Since Ruby just had a serious moment, I guess Kusaka made Sapphire's next scene look funny to release some tension. But that decision just caused way more issues than solved them.

3 - The moment's significance is also ruined because Sapphire's crying in front of the most irrelevant stupid looking background character in the story (Trick Master) who barely knows her. The Trick Master also brings along his equally stupid robot invention that looks like a shitpost fakemon. Sapphire should be having this vulnerable moment in front of someone she's actually close to, like her dad or Ruby, even Winona would've worked better, as these characters would actually notice what a big deal this is for Sapphire. Instead of the Trick Master looking at her crying then going "well ermmmm that was awkward xD"

4 - This moment happens a few chapters after Sapphire basically gets written out of the action, so her suddenly deciding to cry looks terrible ("oh great now she's totally useless") instead of a positive triumphant natural conclusion to her character arc ("in the past she sometimes reacted to stress by yelling at people, but now she can process things without lashing out"). Even worse, Sapphire's stuck in a car (not even as its driver but as a passenger) and can't go help Ruby because Kusaka said so, and now the Trick Master has to wait for her to stop bawling before he can help her, she can't do it herself. This is actually the worst point since it completely undermines her whole character arc: Sapphire reconnecting with her femininity is supposed to be a net positive, but the way it's presented in this context, makes it look completely negative instead. Whenever someone says Sapphire got "ruined" desu I think they're just referring to the sheer confusion this single scene creates, as it contradicts the whole RS arc's own ass narrative.

Anyway this is part of why the RS arc feels like it was running out of time by the end. The awful placement of this milestone in Sapphire's arc is the kind of retarded mistake a writer in a rush would make. Especially considering nearly everything that came before volume 22 was mostly well organized, but also a bit rushed, then the pacing hit the point of no return during volume 22 before it started to crash.

I read through Pokespe many times, never liked the FRLG arc, but it's the best of the remake arcs (not a high bar).

Not that I think of it, it's shit Winona was also relegated to damsel in distress after disappearing during the warp to Mirage Island. Wallace gets all the attention at the end. I think that also hurt Sapphire's character arc during the climax. Ironically, Blue (f) I always found to be one of the better handled parts of FRLG.

Winona was never a great Sapphire mentor anyway because she barely teaches Sapphire anything besides how to get divorced. In fact Winona could even represent the failure of bureaucracy to be effective when it matters, and how Sapphire not caring about laws and rules made her more effective. The Wallace/Ruby parallel doesn't map perfectly onto the Winona/Sapphire parallel either even though Kusaka pretends it does. In RS Ruby actually has a dozen mentors while Sapphire didn't need anywhere as much guidance, probably since she wasn't a PokeAtheist to begin with.

That said Brawly both trained Sapphire and when she was having a tsundere fit, he actually told her to open up emotionally to her friends. Sadly he stopped being relevant after his gym fight. But maybe this just says a lot about how Sapphire's RS character arc was executed in a clunkier more unorganized way compared to Ruby's.

I'm almost done with the arc. It's biggest flaw is it trips over its own theme on family/legacy. Blue, Green, Silver and Giovanni all have their family and bonds as their reason to be involved in the plot with differing attitudes. But Red is the protagonist, and he has no such links beyond his pride as a "Dex Holder", which is something none of the previous arcs ever gave a shit about. iirc, Red is mentioned to have a mother in supplementary material so I don't see why Kusaka just used her as a plot device to gaud Red into fighting.

It's also really dumb that Giovanni openly says he's using Deoxys to find his son and the reaction of the Kanto Dexholders is pure apathy and Green (m) seething about how Giovanni wrote a book about ground types once.

Yeah desu I remember FRLG being "the arc that tried to give Pokespe Red angst" but he never had angst before so it's just weird. Maybe Kusaka wanted FRLG to be like RS, but the protagonists in RS (Ruby and Sapphire) were designed from the ground up to be le deep, while Red at least in RGB/Y was never that complicated. Which isn't even a bad thing, it's just in FRLG they're trying to squish Red into a role he doesn't fit I guess.

I can barely remember the HGSS arc either so take this with a brain of salt. But I remember thinking something similar was happening to HGSS Gold, where he's suddenly having angst, except it worked better than Red angst since GSC had (poorly) established that Gold had these issues prior. But where HGSS Gold's development from here hit a wall is where he knows he must mature if he wants respect, but his whole gimmick is being an immature delinquent to a degree. So there's only so much he can change without losing his marketable appeal. So the HGSS story ends up being about Gold and his Togepi's relationship instead and Arceus hating everyone or something.

But looking at the character arc Kusaka seemed to be trying to recreate, RS Ruby could change so much because he was written to do so from the start. He didn't get an angsty character arc slapped onto him long after his debut like Red or Gold, from the start of RS Ruby was always unstable and on the verge of change, heading towards a direction planned out long in advance. So Ruby's character ends up relatively flexible, to the point he can even end up with shit like a canon girlfriend which no other MCs have so far. Yeah I'm just rambling now.

I'd say if anything, the reason it didn't work is because Ruby is not the analogue to past protagonists. Sapphire is the logical progression (and arguably conclusion) of characters like Red, Yellow and Gold. Sapphire fits the mold of being a conventional hero, but we learn that her being that way is due to fear of abandonment; That she has to do something to be deemed worthy or she'll be left behind.

It's a far more three dimensional version of Gold's MO being he does good things solely for his own self-worth and good feefees. He also has a far less severe and destructive self-worth problem than Sapphire. Early on he constantly rants about wanting to find a way to surpass Silver or get his wants even down to throwing tantrums, but he's so self absorbed he can't see how he has everything Silver yearns for.

Sapphire's eagerness to help or just do something is often the source for her emotionally low points which conclude in that "always" monologue in ORAS when she finds out Ruby concealed the truth from her yet again. It's why Gold's HGSS arc falls flat because it's framed as a lack of maturity rather than a more laidback selfishness and entitlement that makes him not consider the feelings of others. That trait is also increasingly used to comedic effect so HGSS just comes out of nowhere. Red's angst in FRLG is awful because the root of it is borderline nonsensical and it's bundled with other baffling plot decisions (The archipelago-sized lynch mob)

Sapphire on the other hand always considers the feelings of others because they tie to her self worth. I'd also say Gold and Silver also have a similar level of being cosmically cursed/tied though it's far less severe and entirely platonic.

Ruby fits a closer mold to Blue (f) and Silver, which ironically makes the water trio perfect thematically.
