The problem with Megas for me is that they stay so close to the base designs but with some extra details that don't really give them much identity on their own.
So if I hate the base Pokémon the changes a Mega can offer usually aren't distinct enough to make it good.
If I love the base Pokémon the Mega will usually feel excessive and muddying what I like about it.
The few I think are great are the ones where the base design /just/ miss the mark, and the changes of the Mega really brings the design together.

People who dislike Mega Slowbro never understood the concept behind the Slowpoke->Slowbro evolution in the first place. That Mega is the only upgrade that would make sense and true to the original.

Sceptile is a good example for me. The completely vertical spine and the way it almost looks like the tail is dragging completely fail to convey how it is actually supposed to function, making it appear way more sluggish. Something as simple as having the Mega turn around and making a more continuous curve from the head to the tail tip along the spine did wonders for it.

Almost full agree (excluding favorites since personal), but I'd swap Manectrics placement with Sceptile. I was about it visually at least; kinda weak stat distribution though.
