>the transition from route 118 to route 119 in RSE
is this the most soulful moment in pokemon?

>going from mostly beaches and grasslands
>you end up in this route
>oh shit the grass is way taller and its rainy as fuck
>go into the grass
>wild tropius
>holy shit

Not even the most soulful in its own game

I don’t know what soulful is supposed to mean BUT this area definitely still makes me happy despite me seeing this like 10 times already

The music adds to it too, I hate how it’s barely used outside of this instance BUT I love it nonetheless, this and exploring mount corronet in platinum is probably my favorite moments in Pokemon

Fuck you anon now I want to play emerald again.

Not that anon but I liked the southern end of Route 120 where the rain stops and you can see the clouds reflect in the puddles.

Some people claim that you can encounter as many as FOUR Pokémon while surfing these routes, but I've still only seen three

You can use Repel to guarantee an encounter with a level 36-40 in the lead, but it only works in Ruby.

In every other game, water routes are considered the worst routes. They have little Pokémon variety, they need to be wide and open, the Trainer classes are nearly all Swimmers minus the odd dock with a fisher, and every single tile is a potential encounter, as if you were walking through a cave or tall grass. The encounter frequency may be lower, but when every battle is pointless, battles become a useless mechanic that need to be negated with repels for the game to be bearable. It's not even like those long gauntlet routes where you're steadily worn down and have to debate whether or not to turn back.

Diving exists, yes, and that's decent, but it can't do the heavy lifting required for 17 water routes to be fun. The best parts of the Hoenn's water routes are the parts that aren't surfing. Your nostalgia leads to bias.

How had Masuda made so many regions that aren't as fun as the simplicity of Kanto?

How come he couldn't even replicate Kanto's quality in the remakes?

its extremely thoughtfully designed from a gameplay standpoint. i think all of the first 4 gens are but kanto is the best at it

Not that guy, but they’re not. None of the other games have routes on par with that kind of thing, they’re all too short. You can argue the snow route for Sinnoh and the short DP surfing routes due to its speed and that’s about it.

This was the most interesting water route before Hoenn and the water is the least interesting part about it, the actual islands are interesting. The water routes themselves are not interesting. People bring up the Abandoned Ship, and yes, that's interesting, but it's the part of the water route that isn't water. I haven't even mentioned that you listen to the same surfing theme across every single water route. It's not like land routes where your route music updates. For the bits of water routes that take place on land, the music is just reused.

The two snow routes are really cool. New music (a day theme and a night theme), Hail weather conditions, Ice-type Pokémon that you haven't seen before (Sneasel, Snover, Snorunt, Delibird post-game), snowstorms blanketing your vision, trudging through the snow and the wide open field while being ambushed by Trainers. You find a cabin for respite in the storm. Pokémon had never done a snow route before that and they nailed it, and it doesn't overstay its welcome. It's part of Snowpoint City, and you see more snow as you ascend Mt. Coronet.

Other than that, Sinnoh barely had water routes to begin with, and most of them were one and done. The surfing speed boost in Platinum is overpraised, I can see it applying to Hoenn which has seemingly endless water, but not a single person has ever said "too much water" in the context of Sinnoh.
