what happened to the old mega evolution design philosophy?????

This was not made to be a Pokémon used by the player, this and Mega Camerupt were pretty blatantly designed to be enemy-controlled boss Pokémon. And those are the worst kinds of Pokémon.

Maybe but it's the point in time Gardevoir got elevated to shillmon status on the same ground as Lucario and usurped Blaziken as Hoenn's mascot. Diantha was likely more designed around Mega Gardevoir than the reverse

Not talking about Diantha, I’m talking about Wally. Ralts line was one of the later ones added to Gen 3, and used to be purple in older versions of the dex apparently. Wally was conceived early on as a sickly kid who catches a Ponyta, but later they changed trajectory to him becoming a psychic type gym leader. It’s clear that Ralts and its line were finally designed to give him some weak psychic shitmon with his color scheme that would evolve into a strong mon later in the game.
